Gale walked down the street, a cheesy smile plastered on her face. People on the streets looked at her strangely, moving to the other side of the road as she passed. To be fair, she would have been a sight to see with her full black outfit and outfit and jaw length black hair hanging over her glasses. To make it even stranger, she had that manic grin permanently attached her face. But she could help it. Today was just a good day. A buzzing sound came from her pocket, and Gale quickly retrieved her phone to answer the call."Yeah?
"Gale! You better not be late for our hexes class, I don't think I can handle it on my own. And where are you anyway?" Gale smiled in recognition of her best friend, Everit's, voice.
"I'm was with Damien. And don't worry, I'll be there. " She said, attempting to soothe her friend. Everit huffed though the phone.
"You said that last time!" It was true, that last time she hadn't turned up to class, but she hadn't meant for that to happen. And Everit had covered for her, as per usual.
"I promise." She laughed. They continued talking for a bit longer before hanging up, Gale hurriedly walking down the street with her phone in hand. Darkness was approaching, not quite there yet but inching its way into the corners of the sky. She better not be late.
It was rare that Gale had a class this late, but her teacher was busy throughout the day, unlike most of her other teachers. She actually had a job. But there were perks to having her class at night. She got the whole day free to hang out with her boyfriend, Damien. Gale smiled. He was in the same coven as her, and had grown up with her. As Gale didn't know many people her own age, five year old Gale took the chance of friendship and refused to leave the slightly older boys side, and over the years they had become closer and closer. Not that they had always dated. They had been on and off for a long time, but they were back together now. Hopefully for a while.
Gale was starting to blend in with the shadows as the night made itself known. She knew that most typical people would be scared of walking around this late, and maybe even some paranormals. But not Gale. Her face hardened, as her hand came up to brush the mark by her eyebrow. No one in her coven was afraid of the dark.
* * *
As she walked forward, a clawed hand emerged from the alleyway beside Gale. Grabbing her by her jacket, It pulled her backwards before she could react. Gale narrowed her eyes in shock, her hands flaring up in shades of red and purple flames. Her pulse roared in her head, and a smile fluttered forth. Gale was never one to back down from a fight. In the light from her hands she could see five figures ahead of her, all of them with fangs glinting white. Gale's smile faltered. She may be good, but no matter how well trained she was she wasn't going to win five against one. Especially against five vampires. What looked like their leader took a step forward, apparently signalling to the others that they should circle her. Gale stiffened. But she wasn't going to back down that easily. Flicking her fingers, she enlarged the flames in her hands. The alleyway was bathed in light, and some of the vampires flinched back. Gale moved to gesture again with her hands, but one of the vampires came out behind her and grabbed her wrist. Their claws dug into her skin, but she didn't cry out. The flame in that hand flickered to a dull glow. Another vampire grabbed her other wrist sloppily, and a bead of blood rose from where they tore the skin.
And
Everything
f r o z e.
A grin spread across the vampires face slowly, and It moved Gale's wrist closer to its face. Its tongue flicked forward, licking the drop of fresh blood. Gale could feel the vampires cold breath apon her, and a shiver went through her arm. Then the vampire struck suddenly, its fangs digging into the vein by her wrist. Gale felt her energy being drained as the small flames that had remained cupped in her hands finally died. She looked at the vampires, her head flopping slightly. They were clearly enjoying this.
"Pitiful" she thought she heard one mutter. "what's the point of hunting them if they are not even going to fight back?" The voices became more blurred, as she lost more and more blood. A ringing sound filled her head. It sounded almost like her phone... wait. It was her phone. She looked up through her swirled vision as one of the vampires took the call.
"Gale? Come on you're going to be late you better have a good reason for this!" She heard the voice on the other side squeak urgently. The vampire feeding off Gale lifted its head, chuckling. It wiped its face with its sleeve, leaving a smear of blood behind.
" Looks like it's got friends." It said licking its lips, its gravely voice staying void of emotion. All the vampires took a step back, some looking worried at this new development, others grinning at the exciting turn of events. The group moved as one, disappearing into the shadows. It was as if they had never been there at all, but Gale could still hear their laughs echoing through her head.
"Gale?" Everit's voice continued on the phone. "Gale who was that?" Her voice shifted out of focus gradually as Gale lost consciousness.
But she knew. She knew. That she would be alright. Because Everit would help. She always did. And with that last thought, sleep came.
