Both men turned to the sound of the voice, laced with a distinct . I tense, knowing this is my best chance for an escape. The blonde one turns towards me, raising his gun.
"Stay where you are," he hissed. I shrank back towards the wall. The man turned back towards the unfamiliar voice. I craned my neck to get a glimpse of the stranger. He was average height, with a sturdy build, and dark eyes. He radiated confidence, and whether false or genuine, was quite different from most people, always looking down, their eyes wide with fear. He wore a blazer, ripped jeans, and combat boots, all black. I wasn't sure if I could trust him. He was too confident, so he was probably up to about as much good as these other two men.
"Gentlemen, I-"
"Stop calling us that!" the dark haired radiated fury. "What are you doing here? You are interfering with an official government investigation against an alleged traitor. If you leave now, I can simply pretend I didn't see you, and you can be on your merry way. If not, I am afraid I must turn you in, my friend." The man's voice was laced with heavy sarcasm.
"Oh that won't be necessary." He smiled. "You have something I need. I think it would be best if you were the ones to go." Despite the nature of his words, his tone of voice was completely calm, and his face was deadpan.
The blonde laughed. " I appreciate the chivalry fella, but we are clearly the ones with the upper hand here." In one quick motion, he pressed the barrel of the gun into the intruder's forehead.
"I won't hesitate. You won't be the last flame I extinguished today, and trust me, it won't exactly weigh in on my conscience."
The man with the blazer looked completely calm, yet focused despite the barrel of the gun pressed into his forehead. He cocked his head and squinted, staring directly at the blonde. The blonde returned his focused gaze with a blank stare.
Things after that happened very quickly.
The blonde man crumpled to the floor, screaming and clutching his head. He screamed and screamed.
"It's in my brain, it's burrowing in my brain, oh God get it out oh God."
The dark haired man stared at the stranger in terror. The stranger smiled, staring at him in the same way he stared at the first man.
I watched, frozen, as the man, who once looked aware and intelligent, became like someone else entirely. The light fled from his eyes. He backed up, muttering and arguing with himself. He bumped into some metal scaffolding, making me jump. He turned and ran down the alleyway, screaming about someone stealing something from him.
In only a few moments, they were both gone. Both of my attackers were gone. Two people that were the biggest threats I could encounter, gone in moments.
Well, I guess that was it for me. Not like I have much to live for in this hollow excuse for a life. I brace myself.
"Sorry for all the unpleasantries. I need you to come with me. We have a lot of work to do."
I looked at him skeptically.
He smirked.
"Don't worry. I won't fry your brain if you will just stop looking at me like that, God."
"Why should I trust you?"
"Maybe because I saved your life. You know, a thank you would suffice," he said dramatically.
"Ah, yes, thank you for permanently scrambling the brains of two likely high ranking undercover operatives who will eventually be traced back to us, in which we will both be sentenced to death by torture. So yes, thanks for condemning me to a terrible death," I vented.
"Nothing will be traced back to us, how could it? Besides I knocked out all the cameras in the area, and those lovely gentlemen back there probably won't form a coherent sentence for at least a week. Now come with me. We have work to do."
I stuttered in disbelief "what kind of work?"
"You'll see."
I dutifully followed the suspicious stranger into the back alleyway.
