You hadn't seen the gunman in time, a silly slip-up considering your long list of successful missions that were far more complex than this, the result of which had you collapsing to the floor.
"Nat - gunman on the west side of the fourth floor - I've got a shot wound to my side, I don't think it's pierced any major arteries but I cant be sure right now"
"Shit, I'm on my way. Are you safe?"
You went quiet, picking up approaching footsteps.
"Negative"
Ignoring her panicked titters, I held my pistol out in front of me, finger ghosting over the trigger. As soon as the man crossed into your line of vision, you fired.
"Target down"
"I'm just in the staircase, do you know if there's anyone else on the floor?"
"There shouldn't be" you groaned, rolling onto your side to check your wound, "I took out 10 up here already, this was the last room"
You held back a curse as you took in the placement of the bullet, lodged firmly between your two bottom ribs.
"You don't happen to have your nurse's kit with you, do you?"
"That bad?"
"Don't stress, my love, I'll be fine. I always am"
Your reassuring words were cut off by her slamming the door open, eyes wildly searching for you. When she saw you, she raced to your side, hands flying to inspect the wound.
"Ouch"
"We need to get you to the quinjet, can you stand kotyonok?"
You nodded wearily, hobbling to your feet with her help, a sharp pain shooting down your side.
"Motherfucker" you hissed, leaning heavily on Natasha as she started to move, her arms supporting you with hardly any effort.
As you entered the hallway, you spied the lift, silently praying it was functional.
"Nat?"
"Power's off - I'm sorry"
You nodded, a shaky sigh escaping you lips as you approached the stairwell.
"This is gonna hurt like a bitch"
The silence of the building was broken periodically by your pained whimpers and the faint splash of dripping blood. It wasn't until you reached the second floor that you began to feel woozy.
"Halfway there kotyonok, we can do this" Natasha encouraged, her arms helping you straighten back up before starting down another set of stairs.
You chanced a look back, a thin trail of blood coated the floor behind you. You laughed absentmindedly, the sight reminding you of a more morbid version of Hansel and Gretel's breadcrumb trail.
You missed the concerned look Nat gave you as you stumbled down the last few steps, her strong arms stopping you from falling flat on your face.
"Just a little while longer"
By the time you reached the quinjet you were verging on passing out, from the pain or the blood loss you couldn't tell, all you knew is that if you didn't lie down soon you were going to fall down.
Sensing the urgency, Nat rushed you to the little medbay at the back of the jet, forcing you down on the bed and attaching machines.
"Don't you dare leave me - hey! Listen to me, Y/N, don't close your eyes on me now. Not after everything"
Her grip was tight on your shoulders as your eyes fluttered shut, your hold on consciousness loosening. Through the haze, you reached up to grab on to her hand, squeezing it two times.
"I love you too" she choked out, "You're going to be okay. We're gonna be fine - we made a promise remember? You still need to help me choose the new house - you said it had to be better than Barton's"
You made a non-committal noise,
"Stay with me, please zaika" her head dropped onto your shoulder, the low hum of the quinjet lulling you to sleep, "stay with me"
