New York, 2008
At the request of a client to create a website for a company that produced spare parts for muscle cars, Jay Tanner had to make a business trip to Canada.
He had never been to Canada and was very excited about this trip. He was also a fan of muscle cars.
On the day he left New York, the weather was beautiful. Jay would not want to live anywhere else in the world; he was very proud to have been born there.
Jay was listening to the radio, waiting for a courier to deliver a document. The radio announcer said: "Hello, New York! Today is Wednesday the sixteenth. Are you ready for a new day in the most fabulous city in the world? Of course you are."
The door bell rang. The document he was waiting for had arrived, Jay thanked the courier, opened the envelope, checked the contents and was satisfied. It was the lease for the new house he had just moved into on Herald Square.
Now he could depart. He began to pack his bags—not many, because he would only be in Canada for two days.
"Now, where did I put my computer?" Jay said. "Ah here it is. Hope I didn't lose the ticket!"
Jay joked about himself, was not so careless, indeed was very ironic, some friends and certain people advised him to be more serious, because he has already 30 years, but Jay did not notice what others say, he will be like so until the old age.
Jay called a limousine to take him to Newark Airport. When he arrived, he checked the departures board. "Here: two twenty-five p.m. Montreal is mine!"
After touring the duty-free shop for an hour, it was time to board.
The smiling hostess helped him find his seat, and he thought to himself,She is very nice and also pretty. I'm beginning to like Canada already!
When traveling by plane, Jay always hoped to sit next to a nice girl he could talk to. Sometimes he had more luck than others.
He liked to travel because it gave him the opportunity to meet many people, and maybe one day fall in love. It hadn't happened yet, but he never lost hope.
The hostess guided a couple of people toward his seat: a brawny black man, and a girl behind him.
Jay put his hand on his forehead, thinking to himself, I hope he's not going to sit next to me, I really don't want to spend the entire flight with Mr. T of the A Team. Jay was not prejudiced—he had many black friends—but he would much prefer to sit next to a woman
But destiny, fate, whatever you like, was on Jay's side this time. The black man sat in a seat across the aisle, and the hostess pointed the girl to the seat to Jay's left.
Well, not all that glitters is gold, Jay thought as he watched his neighbor. She was a pretty girl with light brown hair. She wore a white top with blue shorts and black flip-flops, and bright orange nail polish.
Not quite what Jay imagined. Also, she was about eighteen—too young for him.
The girl had her boarding pass in her hands, and Jay saw her name, Karen.
He looked at the clouds outside his window. The hostess stopped to ask if all was well Karen was hunched over; she seemed to be cold because she held her knees, her chin resting on top.
She turned and saw Jay looking at her feet resting on the chair.
"Do you like it? I think the orange is fantastic," she said.
