"I can't believe we have 5-page research paper due Friday. I have the most boring topic ever," Liz complained.
"What did Mr. Roshie give you? I got 'The decline in pureblood Kings and Queens'," I said and frowned.
"Ugh, I take it back your topic is worse. I got 'How and why the tiger council was built and what are its primal functions today'."
"That's actually a pretty good topic. I have a few books on that at home if you wanna borrow them," I said as we walked into the locker room.
"Sure, that would be great," Liz said as we walked. "If I were you, I would be offended by the topic Mr. Roshie gave you, though."
"Why would I be offended? I consider myself full blooded tiger. When I shift for the first time, my Da will bind the magic from my mother's side," I said, not realizing that Georgie and Amy were waiting for us.
"What," Georgie exclaimed.
"Ugh, I don't have to discuss this with you. Da already decided on it."
I opened my locker and shoved my books inside. I tried not to look at my twin, but I could practically feel how pissed she was. I stripped out of my uniform and changed into my gym clothes which consisted of yoga pants and a sports bra.
"Why wasn't I told about this," she demanded as she changed too.
"Because it has nothing to do with you. Da and I both feel that the council would take me more seriously if I weren't running around using Kalika magic," I hissed.
Amy and Elizabeth had both faded into the background. I knew they were still nearby, but they were trying to stay out of our conversation.
"And what about me?"
"You won't be going to Council Meetings. Besides, you've never cared about any of that stuff. Why does binding my powers upset you so much," I asked.
"Okay ladies! Classes are about to start. Everyone out," Mrs. Sui called.
The other girls practically ran out of the locker room while Georgina and I stayed behind. She didn't say anything until we heard the door slam shut.
"It upsets me because our magic makes us unique. Are you ashamed of our mother?"
"I'm not ashamed of our mother but I am ashamed of her heritage. I don't know how you're not. The Kalika killed our Grandfather. Not to mention countless other lycanthropes, not just Tigers. It's not like mother would have ever come to live with Da willingly. Or did you forget that mother was da's prisoner before they fell in love," I said.
"You just don't get it," she said.
"I don't get it? Georgina you think Kalika Magic is just like any other magic when it's not. It comes from a place of evil, you don't think that taints us in any way?"
"Magic is all about intent Josie. You would know that if you cared to learn any more about our source of magic than just what everyone says about the Kalika," she said defensively.
I couldn't believe she was actually defending what basically was a terrorist organization bent on the destruction of our kind.
"I'm not the one who doesn't get it, clearly."
We walked through the gym, not speaking. The entire gym class watched us as we walked to the Martial Arts Studio. Mrs. Sui was just taking attendance when we walked in.
"Ms. J. Rex and Ms. G. Rex, you're both late," Mrs. Sui said.
"Sorry, Mrs. Sui. My sister got her hair caught in her locker," I said.
