Livi was having the worst day ever, she felt so bad about these things and throughout the day she could hear people whispering behind her back. She barely even talked to people, so she didn't know why so many people kept getting the wrong signal. It was Soph who usually made her do crazy things and who talked to people. Usually, Livi just stuck around and smiled. Charles however, she had talked to, they were lab partners and he was really funny, so he broke the ice.
Livi usually kept a lot of ice – she had a small circle of people she really trusted and outside that she was just borderline friendly with everyone else. She wasn't picky, she just needed a few friends and well that seemed to make the whole school think of her as spoilt – even when she came to school in a hoodie and leggings.
Livi was walking towards her car when a boy approached her. He had prominent dimples, black hair, olive skin and hazel eyes. He smiled at her with some kind of a glint in his eye. Livi didn't meet his eye and looked instead at the parking lot, a mistake – her eyes met with Charles' and she could see the hurt in them. He was with a bunch of his friends doing something.
The glint boy, however, tapped on her shoulder, "Look, you were probably right to say no to Charles but he was hurt," Livi could barely hear him over the wind, "Still, I forgive you for hurting my friend." He handed her some golden colour balloons, on which it was neatly written – I'm sorry it's not gold, but at least I got the colour. If you don't like it, I understand, you don't like things that aren't expensive right, brat?
She knew what the brat meant, spoilt brat. She didn't even think a second before letting the balloons go. She did look however when she heard the bang.
Will was riding the bike because it was his turn. He was focused on the road, or well parking lot. He had taken just a second to look at Charles and then the girl, whose only back he could see – she was talking to Ethan. When Will looked back in front however, he couldn't see a thing, there were balloons blocking the view! Will tried to stop, but with a jerk instead, only his front wheels stopped, and he felt it in his stomach as his back wheels took a 180 degree turn. The bike landed upside down, his whole body was numb, and he could just barely tell that he was bleeding.
And with that, everything went blank.
Livi saw the bike fully crashed, the boy's leg twisted in a way she didn't know legs could twist. She saw all the blood and she saw the balloons. She ran the strong wind even stronger, pushing her towards the accident sight. She turned her head a little when she had almost reached the boy and she saw her balloons! This was all her fault! There were already a few boys crowded next to the boy. The older man said, "We need to get him to a hospital!"
"I have a car right here," Livi heard her voice say. Charles stood up, "Are you sure that's a good idea?" "What else are you going to take him in, that bike?" Livi said, gesturing the boys to pick him up. Charles said, "Maybe an ambulance?" The instructor, however, agreed with Livi, "The car is right here." Livi got into the backseat of her car where they put the boy. The instructor got into the front seat after telling Charles to call the boy's parents. The boy was on Livi's lap and she could feel her tears vigorously falling. She begged the boy, "Please be alright, please be alright." She knew a hospital very close by. She called the front desk and asked them to get a stretcher ready. They reached within two minutes and the stretcher was ready along with several doctors surrounding it.
They immediately took him in and got him to a room. Livi and the instructor went with them. Livi sat down in front of the door while the instructor filled out some forms. Charles came soon with the other boys and said that his parents would be here in a while. The lights were still on outside the door.
Tears kept falling from Livi's eyes and her heartbeat was running a marathon, fast and not taking a break at all. A nurse came out and Livi stood up and asked her in a cracked voice, "How...how is...he?" The nurse said that she was strictly not allowed to give information until the doctors said anything. Livi sat back down. Charles was walking up and down the hall in front of the room and the other two boys seemed to be staring at a point on the door or maybe they were willing their eyes to look through the door and at their friend again. Everyone was quiet and everyone seemed worried, Charles, who was always smiling, had sat down put his face in his hands and had silent tears running down his cheek.
All Livi could think about was - what if something happened to him? What if he broke his spine or something? Anything that happened to him would be her fault. She could feel the guilt like a termite, slowly chewing at the corners of her heart. How could anyone forgive her for this? If anything happened, it would be her who would be held responsible. She slowly stood up and went to the reception, hoping to do something useful there to distract herself. She had thought her day had been going badly, and then she almost killed somebody. She didn't even know the name of the boy till now. She had his blood on her car seat and her dress, but she didn't even know his name. Only the sight of the accident kept replaying in her head, taking a part of herself each time, how did she do something so horrible?
She called the one person she trusted, "Soph, I did something really bad..." she whispered. Sophia nodded and Olivia told her everything. Sophia looked at her through the facetime, "Oh Livi, I want to be there with you, I really do and I understand how hard this must be for you but chances are he'll be fine, you have him at one of the best hospitals in the city with these amazing doctors that'll take really great care of him. Just don't worry, please. It'll all be fine. Take deep breaths. He's going to wake up soon, I know it."
"But how...you weren't...weren't there! The bike was upside...upside down...and it was...was so bad! What if there is permanent damage Soph...that...that would be on me. I did this to him...I hurt...hurt that poor...boy. I...I can't...it's...what...what if?"
Sophia looked at her for a second and then spoke, "Livi, you're worrying too much. Stay strong, pray for the best and the wind took the balloons to him, it's not even your fault and you need to stop blaming yourself for so much. You didn't intend on hurting him, not one bit. Just don't worry, it will be alright, I promise you."
Livi was going to argue but the nurse said something, "The doctor, will see all of you now. Would you like to come?"
