HOME AGAIN TOUR - NEW MEXICO - 1997
-
LYRIC BELL SAT ON HER BOYFRIEND, Mike Bivins, lap watching as her former best friend, Bobby Brown continued to perform even though his set was supposed to end hours ago. Lyric rolled her eyes as she watched the attention-craving Bobby Brown sing and dance from backstage. "They've given me the signal that it's time for me to go, but I ain't ready to go yet." He yelled into the mic as 'My Prerogative' blasted through the speakers in the background, "So when I say 'Bobby!' you say 'Brown!' "
" Bobby! " " Brown! " " Bobby! " " Brown! "
Get busy! Everybody's talking all this stuff about me.
"At least this time he's aware of the fact that he's going over time," Lyric shrugged, turning her head to the side to look at her boyfriend, who nodded his head. "Yo, RD here yet?" Lyric's older brother, Ricky Bell, asked Mike while pacing back and forth. You could tell how irritated Ricky was getting. This tour was his last chance to get this career back on track so that he'd be able to provide for his family.
" Nah," Mike simply answered, before bringing his attention back to Bobby.
Some ask my questions, why am I so real. But they don't understand me. I really don't know the deal.
Not too much later, Ronnie DeVoe walked in with his bodyguards by his side. "Man, how long he been out there tonight," He asked looking over at the trio, that was visibly pissed. "Three hours," Mike truthfully replied. Rick looked down at his imaginary watch, "Too long,".
" Years," Lyric exaggerated, hopping off Mike's lap and releasing the scrunchie that was secured around her hair, facing the fact that she wasn't going to be able to perform tonight. "So, what, that leaves us time for like two songs, Johnny, maybe one, and then none for, Lyr." Ronnie spat, with his voice rising after every word. Lyric nodded her head as she looked at Ronnie, "That sounds about right,"
" I'm sick of this shit," He fussed, unzipping his black jacket to show his "BBD" overalls. He handed his jacket over to one of his bodyguards. He told them to go to the other side, before quickly hopping on the stage. "Ron," Lyric trailed trying to get up to stop him, but Mike put out his arm in front of her so she wouldn't be able to get past. " What the fuck, Michael?"
"You can't fix everything, Lee, especially not this. Some shit you just have to let play out.." He advised. "Yo, yo, yo, this is BBD's, Ronnie DeVoe," Ronnie announced through the microphone as he interrupted Bob's set. The crowd began to erupt with applause and cheers. " Yeah, yeah, y'all give it up for Mr. Bobby Brown. But New Mexico I only wanna know one thing -- Y'all ready for some BBD? " He asked the audience.
Bobby walked over to Ronnie and wrapped his arm around his shoulder. "What the hell is you doing." Bobby angrily asked Ronnie in his ear. Ronnie tightly grabbed Bobby's side before replying with, "What it look like I'm doing?"
" Wish us luck," Mike told Lyric, quickly kissing her cheek, along with Ricky, before grabbing a microphone stand and waiting for Ronnie's queue. "Good Luck," She yelled over the beat of 'Poison' playing. Rick and Mike joined Ronnie on the stage as Bobby furiously walked off it.
Lyric pressed her lips together before going over to where Bobby stood. " What the fuck is wrong with you? Cutting into other people's set." She yelled at Bobby while pushing his shoulder back. "Lyr, get away from me, I'm not in the mood." He responded, looking over to the side. Lyric dryly chuckled, "Oh? And I am?" She sarcastically asked, placing her hand on her chest.
"I can't perform tonight, again, thanks to you." Lyric continued to complain. "You messing with my money, fool." She stated, pointing her finger at his face. "I don't have the time for this," Bobby replied, rolling his eyes as sweat dripped from his forehead.
Suddenly, a big man that Lyric didn't recognize, came over to the pair with a gang of people and began to shout at Bobby. "Where your boys, man?" He screamed in his ear, trying to get his anger to rise, "You going to let him sucker you up like that? Huh? Huh, Son? "
"Bitch, back the fuck up!" Lyric spat as she raised her hand to his face. In one swift movement, Lyric went from standing next to Bobby, to falling flat on her butt. "You big body bitch," She yelled at the man who just threw her to the ground, while he and Bobby walked away.
Lyric quickly got up and began to jump up and down in an attempt to grab Mike's attention without interfering with the show. But the boys were too focused on their steps and the crowd to notice the 5'5 girl, who was frantically waving her hand around.
Bobby soon came back with an emergency hose and began to twist the top of it in an attempt to turn it on, but thankfully it wouldn't, "I can't get this shit to work," He grumbled at his entourage. "Bobby, what the hell is wrong with you?" She carried on, slapping the hose out of his hand. Lyric grabbed onto his chin and turned his head to face hers, "Are you coked up," She concernedly asked, looking into his eyes for any signs.
This made Bobby even more upset, he slapped her hand off his face before angrily stomping onto the stage, with his crew, disturbing the boy's set. Punches were being thrown from left to right causing the audience to gasp and yell.
When Lyric noticed how bad the fight was getting and that they were headed in her direction, she ran backstage to where Ralph Tresvant and Brooke Payne stood. "What's going on?" Ralph confusingly asked. "Bobby." She coldly responded watching as the group of grown men tackled one another.
"Man, I'm outta here." Ralph annoyingly called as he began to walk away. Brooke sadly sighed as he watched the boys, whom he considered to be his sons, fight and curse at one another. He too started to walk away, but he halted when he noticed Lyric still standing there. "C'mon Lyric." He spoke. "I need to make sure Mike is okay," She murmured looking for him in the crowd of people fighting. "Come on Lyric, it's dangerous. You could get hurt." Brooke told her. "I need to make sure he's okay." Lyric asserted, turning to face Brooke, who sighed before leaving.
I don't know how everything got so bad. The egos, the in-fighting, the jealously. It wasn't always like this.
Ronnie threw some man, who was wearing a sweatsuit and gold chain down to the floor. The man angrily got up and shot his gun at the first person he saw.
When I met them, even at that young age...
Unfortunately, that person was Mike and when Lyric saw that the gun was being pointed at the man she loved endlessly she immediately jumped in front of the bullet with no hesitation.
