"Isaac!" I screamed out desperately after the car that was driving away, leaving a cloud of dust in its wake.
I coughed up the particles that were starting to infiltrate my lungs and flailed my arms wildly in front of my face to avoid inhaling any more.
My eyes were starting to tear up at the helplessness I was starting to feel at the situation. I knew I should've kept my mouth shut.
I looked around at where I was standing and felt the urge to cry grow even greater.
Frantically reaching into my purse for my phone, I tapped the screen to check for any reception.
Nothing.
I was stuck in the middle of nowhere, with no phone reception and zero cars passing by.
The dust that flew around had begun to settle back to the ground and I took the time to breathe deeply and calm myself down.
Don't panic. Think, Em.
I looked at the direction where Isaac's car was heading to and assumed that was probably the way home.
Maybe if I continued walking in that direction, I'll get some reception and be able to make a call.
I bit my lip and braced myself for the, hopefully, short walk I was going to have.
Turns out, the walk wasn't as short as I had hoped for.
It took me three hours of walking to actually find any reception and I almost burst into tears by then.
I considered calling for a cab but decided not to risk the driver bailing on me considering that I was pretty far away from the city.
Nibbling on my bottom lip, I scrolled through my contacts and started shortlisting the list of people I can call to ask for help.
In the end, it all came down to Beth.
My finger hovered over her number, internally wincing. I can already hear the curses and insults and threats she's probably going to scream out once she finds out where I am.
Fuck it.
I pressed her number and crossed my fingers, not exactly sure what outcome I was hoping for.
A part of me wanted her to answer because my legs were screaming at me at that point but another part of me, the part that's scared shitless of her when she turns into a raging monster, hoped she'd miss this call.
Before I could figure out how I was going to ask her for help, her groggy voice came through the line.
"Em?"
"Beth..." I croaked out through my dry throat. I tried to clear my throat but ended up in a coughing fit instead.
"Em? What's wrong? Are you okay?" Beth's voice went up an octave, all grogginess gone.
"Um.. I.." I stammered, before my phone vibrated once.
I took my phone away from my ear to check the screen, only to see the low battery notification.
I cursed out loud before quickly spitting out bullet-pointed information through the call.
"Low batt. Long story, pick me up ASAP, Mt. Peak Freeway 36km mark."
"Wait, you can't possibly mean Mt. Peak Freeway as in the freeway that leads to Mt. Peak the mountain, right?"
"Yes, Beth, I do mean that freeway." I rush out impatiently.
Beth cursed out loud, making me flinch. "What the fuck are you doing in the middle of nowhere, Em?! You do realize that it's a two hour drive, right?"
