Your Backbone

Prologue

*This is an important information that you need to read before you start reading this book.*

Back when humans first appeared on earth, over 80% of them had been gifted with super powers.  These people who had powers had a very special DNA structure. When scientists from the modern world looked at it, they saw that the DNA structure of a person who has powers has three sugar- phosphate backbones. The third sugar- phosphate backbone is actually made of something else. Something that scientists don't know. 

These powers don't have to be some sort of magic that shoots out of your hands. It can be anything that is way out of the ordinary. Such as being able to stretch your limbs for miles, able to open up portals or even being born with a tail. It could be anything. 

Everyone has a different power. There wasn't anyone who had the same power as the other person. However, it is possible that two people can have similar powers. This mostly happens within families. 

Since only 80% had some sort of power, the other 20% of the human population did not. In order to keep the species alive, they began to reproduce. 

When both parents have super powers the offspring will also be born with a power. It can either be a combination of the parents powers or a power a deceased relative had. They would also have the third sugar-phosphate backbone. 

When humans who doesn't have a power started to reproduce with a human who does have a power then their child is born with either no power or a thinner third sugar- phosphate backbone. If they have the thinner sugar-phosphate backbone then they would have a power but they would be much weaker compared to someone who had parents that both had powers. 

After generations and generations and generations, only 60% of the human population now has a super power. 45% are from parents who both have some sort of power. The rest have a thinner version of the third sugar-phosphate backbone. 

People use their powers to help them in daily tasks. They can even use them in their jobs, if given the permission. But there are people who use powers for negative reasons. Causing harm to others. Destroying whole cities in one blast. Reasons for many deaths. 

With people committing crimes others wouldn't even dream of doing, crime rates are higher than usual. In order to keep everything under control each country has an agency that takes care of crimes that involves the criminal using their power. Other crimes that are smaller and don't involve the use of powers are taken care by the police. This agency is there to protect everyone and maintain peace in the country. 

These agencies are called 'Your Backbone' also known as 'Y.B'. Each country has one. You are only allowed to work in this agency if you have a power. Whether it's being a cleaner or an agent.  No power, no job. However, if you wanted to become one of the top agents in your country's agency then you would need parents who both have powers and they cannot have a thin sugar-phosphate backbone. They must have the original size of the third sugar-phosphate backbone. This is to ensure that you are strong enough to protect the country from the dangerous crimes. Before you can become an agent, you have to go through 5 years of training.  You can start training at the age of 17.

There are people who have extremely thin third sugar-phosphate backbones. You would think that their powers are extremely weak. It is quite the opposite. They are actually very strong. Stronger than others who have a thicker third sugar-phosphate backbone. No one knows how this is possible. However, they aren't as strong as people who have the original size of the third sugar-phosphate backbone. 

People call these powers 'Perks'.

This world is different from our world not only because of the powers most humans have, but also because of the way everyone acts, talks and feels. The weather can change randomly at any time. Technology is much more advanced all over the world with cars that are much more faster and don't need someone to operate it. The trains have also became faster and quieter. Holograms have become very normal to see in the streets, whether they are for advertisements or for decoration. Holograms are also commonly found in houses.

Our story is set in South Korea, Seoul.
