"We're always gonna be best friends, right Spence?" Your twelve year old self looked at the little 12 year old genius sitting next to you on the swing set at the playground.
"Of course? Why would you even ask that?"
"Because, you're so much smarter than me. I'm in sixth grade and your already in high school. You'll find some cooler and smarter and older friends than me and then you'll forget about me."
"I'm not gonna forget about you, Y/N."
"Yeah, I forgot about the whole photographic memory thing."
"Eidetic."
"See only you and your smart high school friends are gonna know the difference." You put your head in your hands, leaning your elbows on your knees.
"I'm not gonna stop being friends with you just cause there's people smarter than you. You've been my best friend since we were five."
"Really?"
"Yeah. Then maybe one day we'll solve mysteries together like we always said we'd do." You both laughed.
"I hope so. We never did find out who stole Mr. Wilkin's cat though."
"I think he died." The air was silent for a second before you burst out into laughter.
"Best friends forever right?" You held out your pinky for him to take. He looped his with yours and smiled.
"Best friends forever." You looked at him for a second before impulsively leaning in to press your lips in a very awkward sixth grader kiss while he just sat there wide eyed.

~Present Day~
Spoiler Alert: you were not best friends forever. After that day, you two fell apart. He was a kid genius and you were just you...regular. While you were stressing about freshman year finals he was working on getting doctorates. After that day on the playground, meet ups got less frequent, you didn't wave at each other from your windows anymore. And pretty soon he just faded into a memory in your mind.

Of course, he kept true to his word and never forgot about you. Everyday he wondered what happened to you, where you were now and what you were doing. But he knew you probably didn't have the same memories of him, so he eventually just let it go.

Now, here you were. 18 years later riding up the elevator of the FBI building at Quantico, Virginia, fresh out of college with a doctorate in psychology phycology and masters in human behavior and criminology (you double majored.) During your schooling you trained with a local FBI field office, with 8 and a half years of field experience. The glass doors of the BAU greeted you when the sliding metal elevator doors opened. As you walked, you were greeted by the face of your new boss, Aaron Hotchner.
"Welcome, Y/N. I apologize for the lack of time to get settled in, I hope you're ready to jump right into things." You shook his hand and offered you a smile, hefting the bag you had been told to bring in your other hand.
"Of course." There was no way you'd pass up this opportunity; every since you were little you dreamed of solving crimes and investigating mysteries. Your favorite thing do was play detectives with your childhood bestfriend, Spencer Reid. Your heart dropped a little at the thought of him. For a second, you wondered what happened to him after you guys lost touch.
You were told to come into an office space where you'd be introduced to the rest of the team and briefed, you following Hotch to said room. You entered with a smile as he opened the door.
"Everyone, this is who I was telling you about, Dr. (Y/N) (L/N). This is agents Morgan, Prentiss, Rossi, JJ, Garcia and-"
"Spencer?" Your eyes widened in shock as a grown up image of your childhood bestfriend appeared before your eyes, a smile forming on his face from ear to ear. You walked over to him engulfing him in a hug. He had definitely changed since you saw him last 18 years ago; he was way taller than you now (you had been taller than him back then) and his hair was short. His sense of style hasn't changed that much, as evidence from the crisp slacks and sweater vest over a button up. But his smile and his eyes was just like you remember it, although now that he was grown up he was extremely attractive.  Now that he was right here in front of her again, seeing that smile after so many years-her heart fluttered and her stomach filled with butterflies.
"Y/N, I-I can't believe it. You-you're here! And you're so...grown up." In the same way his grown appearance struck you, yours struck him. He was quite a bit taller than you now, so much so you had to look up at him. You're hair was (shorter/longer) than it used to be, but your eyes were exactly the same. Your style had changed dramatically, from bright pinks and purples to confident blacks and greys. Your body was...fuller, and seeing you again made him almost go weak in the knees.
"At least your taller than me now, Shorty."
"Hey, you can't call me that anymore!" You both laughed while everyone just looked at the pair of you.
"Uhm, you two know each other?" Morgan looked between the two of you and pointed a finger.
"Me and Spence were best friends until we were 12. We kinda lost contact after, yah know, he went to college at 12 and I was just graduating 6th grade." You two smiled at each other, sitting down in the empty chairs while Morgan smirked and chuckled.

You'd been working on the team for about 2 and a half months now, and reconnecting with Spencer was like picking up right where you left off. A couple days after you showed up at the BAU, he'd asked you to dinner to catch up, and it was like time hadn't even passed.
But it had.
And as more and more time passed, you started to notice more things about him. The way he fiddled with his hands when he was nervous, or bit his lip when he was thinking, or how it gave you butterflies every time he-
Oh god.
You were falling in love with your best friend.
