Miki's Hair ^^

Miki's POV

____________

I giggle watching the screen as my mother attempts to try and teach me over Skype how to cook lasagna. She's insistent that now that I'm going to be living by myself I have to learn to cook meals that can last me days.

As grateful as I am for this lesson, my mother can't exactly cook. It's not hard to guess that the times that she's looking off camera is when she's watching my sister Maria to make sure that she's actually getting the steps right.

Deciding to save her from having to struggle, I clap my hands to get her attention. "Thank you so much for the lesson mom but I think I got it. Besides, I have all the recipes that Maria printed out and I kept all the cookbooks that you packed with all my stuff. I think I'm good."

My mom smiles at me. "That's nice to hear. You know I can't help but worry. It's bad enough that you moved, but all the way across the country? Your sisters stayed in the state."

"You know I can't live in New York my whole life," I tell her. Nothing against New York, but it carries a lot of bad memories for me that I'd rather forget about. "California is a fresh start. It has big cities so I'll feel at home plus I'm more than capable of being able to defend myself."

"Ain't that the truth," Charlotte, my other sister and Maria's twin, butts in, sticking her face in the camera frame. "I don't care if you're not supposed to be showing other people your superpower, you better be kicking ass over there or we'll fly out and kick ass for you!"

"Watch your language young lady!" my mom snaps, making Charlotte roll her eyes.

I shake my head. "I thought we agreed not to call it that? Superpower implies that it's something good."

She shrugs. "To me it is. You could be in the Avengers!"

"I think the government would rather lock me up and do experiments on me than send me out saving them from space aliens," I reply.

"Aren't all aliens from space?" Maria asks, with a confused frown.

Before we could really get into the discussion, my mom gently pushes Charlotte out of the frame. "Alright that's enough girls. Let Miki rest up. She spent the last couple days unpacking so she has to be tired. Isn't that right?"

I nod. "Yeah but it's good. Over this week, I have an interview set up with this research company that specializes in medical devices and I have to go to the DMV to get a driver's license."

Rather than looking happy at my plans, my mom frowns. "You got an interview with a research company? For something in medicine? Not that I'm not happy for you darling, but I just don't want you to get your hopes up only to be disappointed later. Are you sure you wouldn't rather just apply to other jobs?"

"Don't worry about it," I tell her. "I know it's a long shot. But it's the biggest job opportunity I've ever gotten. Even if I get rejected, at least I was interesting enough to get an interview. I looked up the company and apparently they're a pretty big deal. Plus I'm applying to be a secretary, not a scientist so I won't be screwing anything up. I wrote on my resume and personal statement about my condition so it's not like they're going to be surprised about it."

"What about the sunglasses? Are you planning to wear it in the office or show up bare faced?" Maria asks, concern lacing her voice.

"When I got the call for the interview, I mentioned that I needed to wear the glasses because I have sensitive eyesight so it should be fine. They said it was okay," I assure them.
