SHE SQUINTED AS the blinding light shone in her eyes. Gabbie wiped the sweat from her brow and grunted as she stepped down the ladder, careful not to drop the screwdriver she held in her hand. She turned towards the counter and packed up her tools in a small toolbox. Footsteps were heard as she turned to leave, only to find Ward Cameron standing in front of her. After the Pogues took John B home and made sure he was fine, she'd rushed home and went straight to bed. Now she was up early for work.
"How is everything?"
Gabbie had planned on avoiding a conversation with him, but she answered with an awkward smile, "Everything's fine. I just replaced some wires, but it's good to go." she gestured toward the light she had just fixed.
He chuckled, "I'm glad the lights are fine, George sent you for a reason, you know what you're doing-"
George was her boss, and Ward was George's boss. Gabriela was an electrician apprentice, and smarter than she liked to admit. George was the electrician she worked under. She was lucky enough to find a cheap program that let apprenticeship start at sixteen. Though she really didn't want to be some electrician, even if it was only until she found a solid career, her mom had insisted on it. It was really just for the money.
"-oh, George was just busy today, that's why." She interrupted.
He smiled, "What I really meant was how's everything with you. You know; you, your friends, your mom?"
"Oh. Yeah, yeah, everything is fine."
"That's good to know." Ward followed suit beside her as she walked out of the house and into the fresh air of the OBX. Gabbie peered up at the hot sun. Sweat made her white top stick to her chest, but the breeze was refreshing. Her eyebrows furrowed as she wondered why he was asking such personal questions. She repeated in her head that she was just here for work, and only work.
She looked back at the big white house. Gabbie had always been jealous of such a beautiful home. Ward paused on the sidewalk and pulled his wallet out from his back pocket. He counted through the cash and handed it her. Gabbie instantly noticed the extra ten dollar bills in the stack.
"Oh sir, thank you, but this is too much."
He chuckled, "It's fine, let's just say I'm a generous tipper."
She hoped he didn't see her as some charity case, but she genuinely smiled, "Thank you."
"Listen, Gabriela. I know your father isn't exactly around anymore, but he'll always be a friend to me. And your his family, so if you ever need anything, just give me a call."
Gabbie didn't think much about his words and looked past him, where Sarah Cameron was walking towards the house, "Have a nice day, Mr. Cameron." And she quickly turned away with a nod.
