Wings of Fire: Owl's Rise

Chapter Three

    Owl smelled a pig. She crouched, following the scent.

Owl had been living in the Aviary for a few months now, and she was able to fly again. She hissed under her breath, seeing a LeafWing sneaking silently through the ferns and bushes. I 'll just have to get to it first, thought Owl. She heard the pig snorting, snuffling around the leaves looking for food. Finally she saw it, in a clearing. She bunched up her leg muscles, pouncing out of her hiding place and towards the pig.... at the same time as a green LeafWing.

Owl crashed head-on into the other dragon's body. The Leafwing roared, seeing this as an attack. She slashed her talons across Owl's snout, leaving bright red streaks of blood. Owl roared in pain and surprise, and stumbled off of her.

"Ow! What was that for?" yelped Owl.

" Don't try your tricks with me, CloudWing. Don't think that I didn't see you stalking me." growled the Leafwing, lashing her tail.

"I wasn't stalking you! I was trying to catch that pig, same as you!"

"No you weren't." said the Leafwing. "You were wanting to eat me weren't you? I knew the legends were true. CloudWings really do eat other dragons. Just wait until I tell everyone else that you tried to eat me! They will kill you, Cloudwing. Just wait." The LeafWing flapped away between the trees.

"Wait! What do you mean "CloudWings eat other dragons"? " cried Owl. But the LeafWing was already gone.

Owl flew up to the tops of the trees. Settling on one of the platforms on top, she watched for the Leafwing, determined to find out what she meant. What did she mean, "CloudWings eat other dragons' ?' they aren't that barbaric, right? If they did, why haven't I ever thirsted for dragon blood. I haven't even hurt another dragon before! Owl thought, rubbing her bleeding snout. She looked around, finally spotting green scales and leaf-shaped wings. She flicked her sharp ears in that direction, catching every little sound. "The CloudWing attacked me!" she was saying dramatically to some other Leafwings. "I saw her eyes, watching me, I could see what she was planning. Then it viciously attacked me! I flailed desperately in self-defense, and finally landed a blow to it's snout. A barely got out alive. Then it ran away, yelling that it was going to kill all the dragons in here! Go spread the word, and we will kill that vicious monster! " The Leafwings she was talking to nodded and flew away to go tell other dragons.

Most of them are going to believe that I'm as much a bloodthirsty killer as she said that I am! Thought Owl in panic. She launched herself off of the high platform and soared to her tree-nest. A tree-nest was a wooden ball that the dragons lived in. She shared hers with Fatechaser, because dragons always stole hers. Dragons were too scared of Owl to steal her nest.

Owl found Fatechaser in the nest, sleeping. "Fatechaser! Wake up!" Owl shook Fatechaser until she woke up, sleep still in her eyes. "Fatechaser! IwashuntingandIranintoaLeafwingandshehurtmysnoutandisnowmakingakillingpartytomurderme-and-"

"WOAH WOAH WOAH! Slow down! Tell me what happened from the very beginning."

Owl took a deep breath, and told the whole story. At the end, Fatechaser's green eyes were wide with fear. "We have to leave." she said, "It's not safe for you here."

Just then, they heard wingbeats. Alot of wingbeats. And they were coming straight for them.
