Owl stretched and yawned. Time for another normal, boring day, Owl thought. She stepped out of her cave, shaking out her feathers.
"I'm hungry." she said to no one in particular. She set off through the forest.
She stalked through the forest on her long, lithe legs, sniffing the air for a tendril of scent. She didn't like hunting from the air, too risky, so she always looked for food on the forest floor first.
After an hour of searching, she gave up and took to the sky, flaring her massive feathered wings. Her sharp ears caught every sound in the sky, from the whisper of mouse feet on the floor to the great cackling caws of the ravens above. Owl didn't like ravens. They were annoying, food-stealing jerks to her. Not worth eating at all. She soared above the treetops, riding the wind. She sniffed again. I smell a deer! Finally something better than rabbits. She rode the wind towards the scent, as silent as an owl. She liked owls. She liked the way they flew silently at night, and the way their hoots carried on the night wind. And their talons. Curved, long talons, like hers. That's why she named herself Owl, after the snowy owls that took flight during winter.
Now she was flying above a clearing. She saw the deer below her, looking around suspiciously. But Owl smelled another scent. Death. Fire. Metal.
Out of nowhere, a huge BANG! Came from the trees, and a buck jumped and bolted into the trees. From the trees came a small figure sprinted out of the trees after the buck. A scavenger! Thought Owl. I've never seen one so close!
She swooped lower for a closer look. Probably the worst mistake she had made in the five years of her life. The scavenger saw her shadow, whirled around, and in one smooth movement, pulled out a strange metal stick. What's that supposed to do, ward me off or something? She thought ... just as another huge BANG sounded from the stick, and agony exploded in her left wing. She shrieked in pain, and fell crashing to the ground. Everything went dark.
