Fool me once, and it's shame on me
But you know you better tread carefully
Fool me twice, I'm your enemy
— Vendetta by Unsecret"He's gone?" I raked a hand through my hair, glancing over at Summer, who was lying unconscious on my bed.
I managed to pull her away from the water before she collapsed. William phoned me a minute after she left for the washroom, informing me that the surveillance team caught the bartender slipping something in her drink.
"I've had the security team search the entire resort. He's nowhere to be found." William sighed at the other end of the line. "Have you gotten her blood test results?"
I glanced at my watch. "I should get it in a while."
"Update me on her situation once she wakes up."
"I will. Mr. John will be contacting you soon on this."
"Noted. Our PR will do their best to make sure this issue doesn't reach the public."
"Thanks, man. I owe you."
"This is the least I could do to pay you back for what you did for me."
Isaac and Liam walked in just as I ended the call.
Keeping Summer here in my apartment in Manhattan was safer than bringing her to the hospital, especially with the possible threat we were dealing with. William called in his family's private doctor, and the hour that followed was beyond excruciating. It broke me to watch them do what they could to drain out the drugs from her bloodstream.
"What does the result say?" I demanded, walking behind the partition that separated the bedroom from the study.
The only thing keeping me sane and grounded was the sound of the heart monitor beeping.
Isaac's face turned impassive. "It's the new drug developed by the Bradford's."
Nodding tightly, I grabbed my leather gloves from the desk. This was my doing, a misfortune that happened because of what I did. Her safety was my responsibility. I was supposed to protect her.
