Brown. That was it. That's all I could see. A special shad of brown that could only be made by mixing other tints of brown together. It was the mixture of the soil in the earth and the color of a polished mahogany desktop. It was a brown that gave me a warm, safe feeling.
But why did I need a warm feeling? I wasn't cold.
Why did I need a safe feeling? I wasn't scared.
Suddenly, there was a push on my shoulder and a slight whisper. Soon that whisper turned into the loud buzzing of my alarm clock. Realization hit, and I sat up form bed. Above me, Stacia was slipping an earing through her piercing.
"Ember, hurry up! You're late! And so am I! I have to go, but seriously, get your ass up," She scurried out of my room and I slammed down on my alarm clock; turning it off. I had totally forgot today was my first day of uni, and I was already late.
*******
After my vanilla scented shower, I pulled up to the parking lot of the school. Kicking down the stand, I peeled my helmet off of my head and bolted to the main entrance of the building for my first class; American Government. In my bag, there was a laptop and a bunch of papers and notebooks. Nervous was an understatement.
I had heard that for this University, the professors locked the doors of the classroom if you arrived late.
As I turned the corridor, I noticed another person bolting from the opposite side of the hallway. His arm held a folder as he raced his way to the door. The same door.
"Fifteen seconds!" I heard someone yell form inside the classroom, the voice echoed all the way to my ears, causing me to push my body faster. I caught a glimpse of the other student's arm and my stomach dropped. He was way closer to the door than I was, and I wasn't going to make it.
"I'm not going to make it," I spoke quietly as I slowed down. I looked up at him and once my legs began to slow, that's when I saw him put forth more effort. Then I watched him run past the door, and he sprinted towards me. He slid on the ground, beside me, grabbing me by the arm. He yanked me forwards; his speed and strength launching me forwards.
Right when we slid into the classroom, the loud sound of the bell chimed and a roar came from the students.
"He finally made it!" One of the guys in the back yelled, and I tried my best to catch my breath.
"Wow. I've never thought you would actually make it to my class on time, Mr. Hood," The professor said walking around his desk. He leaned back on it, crossing his arms as he waited for a response.
"Well," He breathed, "I had some motivation," Calum winked down at me, his brown hair was spiked to the side as he held his hands on his waist.
"Right, and you must be Ember Marks?" Professor Andrews pushed off from the table, making his way over to me. I nodded slightly, swallowing my heavy breathing.
"You moved all the way from the United States right?" He questioned and I nodded once again. I dipped my head down, embarrassed. Not only was I the new girl, but now I was the new American girl.
"Okay, well you guys can take your seats now," He ordered. I sighed as I gulped. Looking around the classroom, all of the tables were in sets of doubles and my stomach dropped. I had to sit with someone. I had to actually talk and make friends. Great.
Next thing I knew, I felt a tugging on my long sleeve and I looked up to see Calum motion for me to follow him. We walked up a few steps, into the fourth row up, and sitting at an empty desk.
"Thank you," I whispered over to him as we took a seat. All he did was nod his head in reassurance. He was wearing a v-neck and a part of his tattoo was poking through. I could see my artwork engraved on his skin and it made my toes tingle.
