Evergreen

'Cause honey, your soul could never grow old, it's evergreen

And baby, your smile's forever in my mind and memory

She was wild, really. It was so strange to Scorpius, and yet so perfect. He hadn't been raised to marry some pureblood girl, not really, but he had still been raised around the attitude that a girl was supposed to be... Well, perfect.

Then Rose had come along, and she was wild. Wild and reckless and carefree, fiery as her hair, with the loyalty of her father and the smarts of her mother. She was a whirlwind, perfectly imperfect.

He would never tire of her smiles, her laughs, her determination. Every bit of her personality shone brightly, her caring and her impulsiveness, her sweetness and her passion.

They snuck out at night sometimes. They would sneak up to the Astronomy Tower to watch the stars. She would bring her red and gold quilt - the one that Grandma Molly made - and they would lay side by side. Summer nights were the best for star watching, but winter nights were Scorpius's favorite. Even though they couldn't see the stars some nights, those were the nights when Scorpius would bring his own green and silver quilt and they would curl up together between the two quilts. He would run his hand through her wild, blazing red hair, and she would curl into him, her back to his chest. They could've laid there forever, every time, but they knew they had classes the next morning, and so they would part with promises to talk the next morning, each taking their own quilt back to their own dormitory.

They had become friends in second year, when he hexed a third-year for calling her Mudblood. She knew he was friends with her cousin, Albus, as they were both in the same house, but she had never truly spoken to him. To tell the truth, she barely spoke to Albus anymore, either. They had drifted apart during first year, but after "The M Incident," as she liked to call it, she started making an effort to talk to him again.

The three of them had become fast friends, hanging out whenever they could. Some teachers commented they were almost like Harry, Ron, and Hermione during their schools days, only with two of the three in Slytherin.

Ron had been understandably shocked when Rose told her parents Albus was friends with Scorpius Malfoy, but that was nothing compared to his reaction when she announced later that she, too, was friends with Scorpius, and then, years later, that she was dating Scorpius. He had tried to forbid her from seeing Scorpius, but she reminded him that not only was she in sixth year, she had turned seventeen that November, and so he couldn't tell her who to date. He tried to tell the other Weasleys and Potters to keep her away from Scorpius, but once you took out Albus (who was best friends with Scorpius), Lily (who thought Scorpius was sweet), James (who had graduated earlier that year and who obviously thought Scorpius was alright or he wouldn't have let Albus hang out with Scorpius), and Fred (who had also graduated and had decided Scorpius had to be alright if Albus was still alright after hanging out with him for his entire time at Hogwarts), there weren't really that many Weasleys left and no Potters left.

They stayed together through the rest of their time at Hogwarts, and when they left Hogwarts, Rose found an apartment in Diagon Alley with Albus's girlfriend, Karma (also a Gryffindor) directly across from Albus and Scorpius. Scorpius, Albus, and Karma were all training to become Aurors, while Rose was training to become a Healer.

Sometimes, they would still go out and watch the stars, just the two of them, with a red and gold quilt and a green and silver quilt. Occasionally they would be joined by Albus and Karma, but more often than not, it was just the two of them, just like at Hogwarts.

When they first kissed, it had been under the stars in sixth year, on a clear, cold, December night. She had been talking (they didn't even remember what they had been talking about anymore) and she had turned towards him, and suddenly all he could think about were those big brown eyes and that sunkissed nose and that fiery red hair, and time seemed to freeze. Before he had realized what he was doing, he had leaned forward and kissed her, and she was kissing him back. His hands were in her hair, and hers were on his chest, and it was perfect.

When he proposed, it was also under the stars.

Scorpius had just finished Auror training, along with Albus and Karma, and she had just finished her training to be a Healer. They were laying on the roof, talking about what they were going to do next, where they were going with their jobs, and he had stopped and looked at her, just like that time back in sixth year, and this time she kissed him. It was he who pulled away this time, though, and he sat up, pulling her with him. He reached into his inside jacket pocket, pulling out a small box, and her hands flew to her mouth.

"Rose? Will you marry me?" Scorpius asked. Clear and simple, but holding so much weight.

She was nodding before he even said the last word, before he even had a chance to be nervous. "Yes," she blurted out. "Yes."

They planned their wedding under the stars, talking about it as they watched the stars, curled up between those two quilts.

"What colors?" Rose asked Scorpius.

"Red and gold and green and silver," he said immediately. "Just like us."

She smiled. "Time of year?"

"How about winter?"

She nodded. "Perfect. I don't suppose you've thought about the flowers, too?" she asked, a teasing edge to her voice, but he answered seriously.

"Roses and evergreens."

She gaped at him, not expecting him to have a ready answer. "Why evergreen?" is all she could think to say, because the roses were obvious.

"Because my love for you is evergreen," Scorpius answered simply. "Even when we're a hundred and seven, all you have to do is look at me, and I'll fall for you as hard as I did at seventeen. No matter how old we get, your spirit will be evergreen, and even when you can't dance the same way because your legs don't work the same, or when I can't lift you into my arms because my arms aren't strong enough, I'll still love you the same." He looked down and blushed suddenly.

She smiled at seeing him showing this rare bit of insecurity. "It's perfect," she told him. "Roses and evergreens."

When they married, it was under the stars. Draco and Astoria set up a marquee in the garden, and the entire wedding was red and gold and green and silver. Her dress was gold and silver, and her bouquet was roses and evergreen branches. And under the stars, they said those two little words each.

"I do."

"I do."

~~~~~
I'm thinking 'bout how people fall in love in mysterious ways
Maybe it's all part of a plan
I'll just keep on making the same mistakes
Hoping that you'll understand
But baby now
Take me into your loving arms
Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars
Place your head on my beating heart
I'm thinking out loud
That maybe we found love right where we are
