"so alex, we meet again."

alex took a deep breath as he readjusted himself in the chair.

it's an old wooden one like the ones used in the library in primary school.

he wished he was in primary school.

well, not exactly, but it would be better than here.

alex hates it here.

his therapist is always talking about things he never understands, and she always overexplains things to george, as if she's trying to make it seem that something's wrong with alex.

but, there's nothing wrong with alex, right?

alex thinks he's okay. i mean, he has a perfect relationship with george, and he gets along with his friends, so he's fine.

but there's still a part of him that won't stop thinking about niall.

he moved on from thinking it was his fault, he knew he couldn't have prevented it.

but, for some reason, he can't forget the man.

alex sighs out loud without intending to, but the therapist knows how he is and quickly gets his attention by clearing her throat.

alex attentively looks back up at the woman.

today she's wearing the same grey suit and pants she always wears.

but the wedding ring is missing from her finger.

alex wants to ask her about it, but he doesn't want to seem rude, so he keeps his mouth shut and listens to her old, gravely voice.

"i think you might like to know, mr elmslie, that i once had a patient with a similar experience."

alex rolled his eyes. he hated the word patient.

"his friend, who shall remain anonymous, had a lot of mental problems. he once told me that his friend's mum refused to believe his existence.  now, his friend didn't have the best home life, and well, long story short, he ended up burning himself alive in a treehouse."

alex opened his mouth, but the older woman was far ahead of him.

"i'm talking about niall," she starts, standing up and walking behind her, where her desk is. "a few weeks ago, i was searching for files for another patient, and i came across niall's."

alex let out an audible gasp at that sentence.

he never thought niall would do anything adult-like, especially go to a therapist.

the woman started to open up the drawers on the front of her desk, rapidly opening them and slamming them shut.

a few seconds of this continues, but she finally closes a drawer and turns around, walking straight ahead to the man.

"i thought it wouldn't hurt to have these, i mean it's not like he's coming back from the dead," she laughs at the last sentence as she hands the brunette a light caramel coloured folder.

alex wanted to say something back, but he felt like he shouldn't.

he wouldn't want to worry george any more than he already was.

as he flips open the file he's holding in his hands, his eyes dart to the small black and white photo of niall pasted onto a piece of paper with his name and address.

just seeing the man makes alex want to lock himself in his room days on end.

but he can't even do that, thanks to george.

as he goes to look at the other side of the paper, he hears a little beep go off, and looks up to see the therapist putting on her mismatched aqua blue coat.

"i have to go early today, one of my patients is having surgery and isn't sure they can stay calm," she speaks with a sigh, almost as if she regrets doing her job.

she opens the door and alex quickly stands, afraid of being locked inside of her office.

he walks- no, practically runs past her in the corridor.

before he turns the corner, she yells a "goodbye" to him.
