It took me a while to pull away from Gabriel. I couldn't deny that I was beginning to have feelings for him, and even when I did pull away from him I still looked up into his golden eyes. We stood in silence as we looked at each other, trying to tell what the other was thinking. Without even realizing it, he grabbed my hand and looked down at it as he held it. Finally I broke the silence, "I don't know what to say Gabriel. I like you, but on the other hand if I choose you over Max, then that could get us both kicked out of the gang, and I don't want that to happen. Where else could we go? I can't even be alone for five minutes without shifting right now. If more people saw me shift, we could become lab rats or something like that."
"You do really think that Max's gang is the only one out there? Other gangs are always trying to get people to join. It's like a game. If Max hadn't come for you, someone else would have" his eyes sparkled, "You really would leave this all behind? Just so we can be together? I can't make a decision like that yet. I haven't even been here for a whole day! I need time to think." I was beginning to feel very stressed out, and Gabriel could tell, "I understand, a decision like this is not easily made. You have all the time in the world to think about this. But you only have two options. Stay here and be with Max, or leave and be with me." he pulled me into a hug, then kissed me on the forehead, "Sleep well, tomorrow we go to New York." as he pulled away I smiled to mask my growing worry, "Good night." I whispered as he turned away.
I didn't have the energy to move anywhere, so I just sat down on the floor and curled up into a ball. I had no idea what I was going to do. If I chose Max, then Gabriel would hate me and try to kill Max. If I chose Gabriel then Max would kick us both out of the gang and we would have to find a new one. But would our gang be enemies with Max's gang? Probably. Max would probably try to kill us both. But for some reason my mind was telling me to choose Gabriel. There was just something about the way his eyes glowed in the darkness, and the way his smile lit up the room. I could tell that one way or another I was going to end up with him, so why not choose him now?
My head was beginning to throb, so I stopped thinking for a moment, then I had a plan, I would wait a few weeks to tell Gabriel that I had choosen him. And during those few weeks leading up to me choosing, I would learn how to better control my shifting. I smiled to myself. This was a great plan. There was no way it could fail. With that thought I allowed myself to relax, and I slipped into a dreamless
sleep.
I woke up to someone shaking my shoulders, " Evelyn! Evelyn! Get up! It's time to go." Gabriel's smooth voice danced into my dream. I slowly opened my eyes, only to be greeted by his too close face. I sat up in surprise, crashing my forehead into his. He toppled over onto the ground next to me, "Ouch!" he exclaimed, "I'm so sorry! I didn't mean too! You were just really close and your startled me, so I sat up." my words grew quieter as I blushed with embarrassment, "Note to self, never lean over Evelyn when she is sleeping, she will headbut you." Gabriel's voice held some amusement as he stood up. He helped me up then patted me on the back, "Sorry for scaring you, it won't happen again." I laughed, and he joined me, "Evelyn! Gabriel! Let's move!" Max's voice rang throughout the whole warehouse, "Coming!" Gabriel shouted back.
We both exchanged an amused look, and I was pretty sure that I told him with my eyes that I chose him. But I couldn't be sure. We picked our way through the mess of boxes. Whoever had organized this place really needed a lesson on making straight lines. We finally came into view of the door, and saw a very flustered Max waiting there, "We need to get out of here. Your parents just filed a report saying that you are missing. Apparently they didn't get the message that you were spending the night at your friends house. I've been letting people leave in small groups so we don't arouse any suspicion." Max seemed very stressed out, "What? I told them both that I was spending the night! I guess they don't listen very well." I groaned, Max glared at me, "Yeah, Apparently not. Anyways we are the only three left, so let's get a move on before the cops find us." Max turned towards the door, "Wait." I said. Max turned to me and rose an eyebrow. I didn't reply, I shifted. I now had light blonde hair, and deep brown eyes. Max smiled, then he shifted too a person with brown hair and brown eyes. Then he left the warehouse, "You still look beautiful." Gabriel whispered as we walked out. I turned to look at him and was shocked to see that he had shifted too. He had light brown hair and ocean blue eyes.
I nodded to him and smiled. Then a sense of dread filled me as i realize who I would be driving to New York with. Max and Gabriel. They both didn't seemed bothered by this yet, but I knew that this ride could be disasterous. I was ushered into the front seat, while Max took the drivers, and Gabriel was in the back. I decided that the best way to spend this ride was sleeping, so I closed my eyes. Five minutes into the drive the car slowed to a stop, "Have you seen this girl?" a strange voice asked, so I opened my eyes a tiny bit. We were stopped at a police checkpoint, they were looking for me. Wow, my parents must have pulled out all the stops for this. I felt bad for leaving them, but this was the first time they showed that they actually cared, "No sir." Max replied sincerely, "Alright, call the police if you do find her."
After a pause the car lurched forward into drive. I snuggled back into my seat, waiting for sleep to come, but it wouldn't. Twenty minutes later I gave up on my attempt to sleep, so I just looked out the window, "Trouble sleeping?" Max and Gabriel asked at the same time. I could tell that they would be glaring at each other now so my only response was a nod. I decided that I didn't want to hear them arguing, so I closed my eyes. This time, sleep came.
