Chapter One: Peaceful Days
For someone who had fought so desperately to preserve it, Harry Potter was the first one to admit he had no idea what to do with the notion of peace. In truth, he had never given much thought to what he would do if he made it through school, as frankly, he had never expected to make it that far. But here he was, a Hogwarts graduate, with his old Nemesis sleeping over every other night and no sign of Lord Voldemort. He found that he was constantly looking for The Dark Lord to pop out from behind the huge severed troll foot at Grimwald Place and yell "Surprise!!!" but after several months of that not happening, he realized that he was going to have to come to terms with peace...
"Can you pass the salt?" Draco repeated, snapping Harry from his thoughts. He quickly passed the salt across the table to the waiting Slytherin. Draco's hand brushed his, as he passed it, and Harry was fairly sure this was done on purpose.
"Accio Salt," Harry commanded wordlessly in his mind, watching as the salt container whiz out of a very perplexed looking Draco's grasp and into his outstretched hand. Draco crossed his arms and glared in a manner that very much reminded Harry of "3rd year Draco".
"Wizards don't have to pass the salt remember?" Harry reminded his silvery haired lover.
"Weren't you raised by muggles though?" Draco quipped back loudly under his breath, arms still crossed over his chest in displeasure. "Now I have half salted potatoes because of you. What do you have to say for yourself, Potter."
"I'm sorry but you know I have to keep things interesting or else you'd find another chosen one to date." Harry joked, green eyes twinkling.
"On Salzar's snake, I should replace you for all the pranks I have to deal with," Draco said moodily, but Harry could just see the ghost of a smile behind that forced scowl. Harry wished that he had seen that hidden smile sooner, he might not have wasted so much time fighting with Draco if he'd known the Slytherin had a sense of humor.
"Who could ever replace the boy who lived?" Harry asked cheekily. Spending so much time with the Malfoy eir was really starting to rub off on him. The two of them had barely been apart since the end of school after all, and Harry couldn't deny that Draco's confidence was infectious to him.
"Someone who doesn't Accio the damn salt out of my hand," Draco replied, breaking into the most beautiful smile Harry had ever seen. It was the type of smile that still felt rare to him, even though he saw it almost every day.
"I reckon that's fair." Harry said, sighing in fake despair, "I guess I'll just find another Slytherin to bother since apparently my type is people who like to verbally assault my Grifindorness."
"You could never," Draco said, and there was a little hint of fire in his tone that made Harry's cheeks feel warmer.
"Hmm I think you're right maybe we should just agree not to replace each other any time soon then," Harry said, looking at the table to avoid Draco's burning eye contact.
"About that..." Draco said after a small pause, causing Harry to meet his intense eyes again. "I've been thinking..."
"Have you?" Harry asked, having a feeling he knew what was coming. Draco had been making comments about how Harry was living in "dust and squaller" a bit more often lately and it didn't take a Ravenclaw to realize he was hinting at him moving in.
"Yes, I have," Draco said pointedly. "I think you should move in with me." He said quickly as if he was forcing the words out before he thought better of them. Harry tried for a weak smile.
"I like Grimmwald Place." Harry countered weakly, watching Draco's face fall slightly as the Slytherin looked down at his half salted potatoes with contempt.
"You like me more though," Draco said, looking up from his food into Harry's eyes with determination. That was one of the things Harry had grown to appreciate about Draco in the time they had spent together, he was always fiercely set on success.
"That's true," Harry admitted. He had a feeling Draco knew he was short on reasons why they shouldn't move in together, other than that their relationship was moving faster than Harry was sometimes comfortable with.
"Then what's the problem," Draco asked. He wasn't going to take no for an answer, that much was clear to Harry.
"There isn't a problem... yet..." Harry said weakly.
"Don't be stupid, there isn't going to be a problem." Draco shot back, his blonde eyebrow was beginning to raise in annoyance, presumably from expecting Harry to be overjoyed to move in with him, and instead, he received pushback.
"There's always a problem," Harry said quietly after a little while of silence stretched between them.
"Maybe that's because you haven't learned to function when there isn't a problem." Harry winced but didn't bother arguing with that, he knew Draco was right.
"I'm sorry," Harry said, looking away.
"Don't be..." Draco told him in a voice that sounded nothing like the Draco he'd grown up with. "Just let me help you get comfortable with not having problems." Harry looked at him, eyes softening.
"By moving in with you?" Harry asked in a weak voice, rubbing his scar even though it hadn't so much as prickled in a while. He just kept expecting it to.
"To start," Draco said, reaching across the table to capture Harry's hand in his. Harry lost himself in Draco's eyes in spite of himself and the argument.
"Yeah okay." Harry breathed, the weight on his shoulders shifted slightly. He smiled a little at that. "I'll move in with you."
"Never doubted you wouldn't," Draco admitted, smirking to himself.
"Slytherin."
"Gryffindor."
"I love you," Harry said, squeezing Draco's hand a little for emphasis. "Creature will be heartbroken. He almost shit his pants with happiness when he saw your pure blood ass walk in."
"Well you did lose my family a house-elf once, consider it your apology that he moves in too," Draco said, unable to keep the excitement from his voice.
Harry shook his head. "He serves the house of black remember, I don't think he would betray the family he served if he was forced, plus we don't really need a house-elf."
"Then who's going to clean and cook?" Draco asked in horror causing Harry to laugh loudly at him.
"We will," Harry said after he was finished laughing at a scowling Draco.
"Who do you think you are?" Draco demanded. "Malfoys don't do manual labor."
"Well... Potter's don't enslave house-elves," Harry said seriously, causing Draco's face to sober slightly.
"Fine but we're working on your hero complex," Draco muttered.
"Only if we can work on your superiority complex," Harry said, causing Draco to laugh lightheartedly.
And so it was that Harry Potter agreed to move in with his old nemesis.
