Chapter three • Keisha

"K-keisha, what are you doing back
here?"

"You obviously look hurt Roman, Mya's mother did something to you, I saw the pain flash in those brown eyes of yours."

His eyes start to water. "Come in."

I walk in and sit on his sofa, I pat the empty space next to me."Sit." He does as I say and sits next to me. I open my arms for him and he lays his head on my chest as I stroke his hair. "You don't have to tell me everything if you don't want to."

"Her name was Biancca. We were high school sweethearts, I was 15 and she was 16. I loved her so much I thought I was gonna marry her. Years go by and we had Mya and I fell even harder for her. All my friends said she was a heartbreaker, but I didn't listen to them because I had so many feelings for her. I thought our connection was deep, only to find out the feelings weren't mutual. She used me, she told me she didn't want Mya anymore and she was two months old at the time, I didn't know what to do. My whole life came crashing down, she packed her things and left me and Mya and never came back. My brother told me that she moved back to the Philippines, but that was in 2016, it's time I get over it." He wipes his tears and I find myself wiping my own.

"No it's fine, you loved her so much and she broke your heart. I totally understand."

He looks up at me. "What do you mean?"

"Well back in 2009 I fell in love with this guy named Trey, he was so handsome, every little thing he did for me made me fall in love with him even more every day. We became an official couple and everyone in my neighbourhood knew. It felt like I was in a dream with him. I got pregnant with his baby, but then everything turned into a nightmare. I told him about the pregnancy and he just left me, I haven't seen him since except on social media."

"So you have a child?" He asks.

"Yes I do, she's 11 and I was only 19 when she was born. She really needs a father figure in her life though. She says I'm in desperate need of a man." We both laugh. "I'd never thought I'd end up as a single mum but I don't regret having Sariyah, she lit up my world when it was dark, she's funny but she also protects me from everything and I do the same for her. At this point I don't think she cares about Trey anymore."

He looks up into my black eyes. "I hope she finds that father figure in her life." I stare into his brown eyes and smile.

I massage his scalp and he let's out a moan.

"So do I."

He wraps his arms around my waist and holds me tightly but not too tight. All the crying has made me sleepy. My heartbeat lulls him to sleep as I fall asleep in his embrace.
