-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The licking flames stir wildly in a savage dance.
They surrounded me wholly, allowing me no chance.
Any movement I make would only cause instant death.
And the smoke is garroting my lessening breath.
My faded hope is all but diminished
As I realize I'm already finished.
The increasing heat and scorching pain swells much higher.
My entire being knows my end will be met in fire.
Long since passed has the blaze consumed my vision.
Now leaving only darkness for me to see risen.
The scent of my own singed flesh wafts everywhere throughout.
Apprehension swiftly strikes as I realize my only route.
Perishing in flames is how I'll depart, having none by my side.
The thought induces wonder if I might receive some guide,
Maybe one of divine light to lead me in eternal glory.
I deserve it after enduring a fate so gory.
Forcing out another breath of air, intending to be my last,
I perceive a sound quite familiar to my past.
My body's all but expired.
Yet it seems I'll be rescued from fire.
Hope sets in again and I turn towards the sound.
Behold, a gushing river in my way is bound.
The relief instantaneously washes over the pain.
It floods my charred body, ceasing the cause of my bane.
Gratitude wells within me to immense proportions in response.
Until my air supply discovers the water to be more than it wants.
Once more my lungs burn for oxygen, pleading for air.
But I knew that nowhere in the vicinity was anyone there.
Death had marked me for the taking originally,
And into agony I sunk as it seized me.
