Soft light trailed it's fingers across the three felines that lay inside a bracken nest, their fur melded as the two kits suckled at their mother's stomach.

The mother, a purist of the mighty Imperials, rasped her tongue over the smoky black kit-fluff of her son, smiling as she stroked her tail over her little daughter's calico pelt. She was exhausted from their birth, her eyes half-lidded and grin weak.

She ripped her gaze from her newly born children to the blue-eyed she-cat gathering herbs from the dusty floor and preparing to leave.

"Crystalpaw," the molly called quietly to the young healer exiting the nursery, "could you fetch Spiderbite while you're out? We need to name our kits."

The white apprentice nodded, her graceful form slipping out of the den and into the cloudy morning.

Squirming as faint voices reached her ears, the female kit nuzzled closer to her mother's tortoiseshell pelt, mewling pitifully as a fluffy coat smothered her from the side and another thickly-furred body rolled onto her own.

"That one will be a fighter, Freckleddance, that's for sure." A new, deep male voice joined the light squeaks erupting from the tussling minors. Pausing, the little she-kit raised her berry-pink nose, stretching her tiny jaws wide to scent the newcomer.

Her mother's belly rumbled with a loud purr. She leaned forward to touch noses with the dark tom, who moved to lay beside the nest. His long fur was the exact shade of his sons', with the exception of small, circular white spots above the tom-kit's eyes.

"Have you slept?" He asked quietly, shifting himself to hover over the nest.

Freckleddance shook her head. "Not since these two arrived. I can sleep later, but they need names. And they must be good ones," she added, "You know how your sister is.

"Spiderbite? I want to name her Titkit, after the bird."

"After the bird..." Spiderbite echoed, looking down at the named kit and swiping his long plumy tail over his mate's spine. Nodding in agreement, he shifted his golden gaze to the second kit, the firstborn.
