Next day, we were playing cricket in the huge garden of the professor's house. Susan was wicket keeper, Edmund was batting, Peter was bowling, I was in midfield, and Lucy was sitting against a tree reading a book. "And Peter lines up, ready to take yet another wicket!" Peter commentated as he bowled the ball. It hit Edmund in the leg. "Ow!" He cried. Susan and I giggled and Peter said, "wake up, dolly daydream! Are you ready for this one?" "Are you?" Edmund said, hitting his bat against the ground twice. Peter bowled, and Edmund hit the ball hard. It flew high I to the air, and I ran to catch it. It was going so high and so far there was no way I was going to reach it. It smashed through one of the stained glass windows. "Well done Ed," said Peter, angrily. "You bowled it!" Edmund cried in reply. "And Beth didn't catch it!" He said. "How was I supposed to catch that!?" I said. "Let's go find it before the McReedy notices," I said. We all ran up to the room where the cricket ball had smashed through the window.
Suddenly we heard sharp and quick footsteps. "The McReedy!" Susan gasped. We ran for it. We ran up all of the back stairs, avoiding the main ones if we could, but all the while she seemed to be getting closer. We ran into the spare room with the wardrobe in it and we all hurried in. "Move over!" "You're standing on my toes!" "Ow!" "Get off!" Suddenly Peter, Susan and I fell back and landed in soft, white snow. "What the-" I began, picking up a big handful of snow, which was absolutely freezing. "Goodness," Susan said disbelievingly. "I suppose, saying sorry won't quite cover it?" Peter said to Lucy. "No...," She began. Then she threw a snowball at Peter's face. "But that might!"
We had a big snowball fight, that ended abruptly when Susan threw a snow ball at Edmund. "Ow! Stop it!" He said, rubbing his shoulder where the snowball had hit him. "You little liar!" Peter said suddenly to Edmund. "You have been here before!" I said angrily. "You didn't believe her either!" Edmund protested. "We said sorry to Lucy," I said. "Say you're sorry!" Shouted Peter. "Alright! I'm sorry!" Edmund cried. It didn't sound like he meant it, but we left it at that. "It's all right," said Lucy, "some little children just don't know when to stop pretending." "Maybe we should go back" Susan said. "I think we should explore a bit," said Edmund, but nobody was listening to him at that point.
"I think, Lucy should decide," I said. "I'd like you all to meet Mr. Tumnus!" Lucy cried instantly. "Well Mr. Tumnus it is then!" Peter grinned. "We can't go trudging through the snow like this!" Said the ever-sensible Susan. Peter went back into the wardrobe and pulled out five furry coats. He handed one to each of us and said, "if you think about it, we're not even taking them out of the wardrobe!" He handed one to Edmund who said, "but that's a girl's coat!" "I know," said Peter, shoving it at him.
We walked for a while, the furry coats from the wardrobe keeping us nice and warm. Finally we reached what looked like a cave with a door in it. The door looked forced open. "Lu...," I said. I could see that Lucy was too excited to notice what had happened. "Oh no!" She cried and ran to the broken-down door. We all ran after her and went inside. The place had been ransacked. Everything was all over the floor, and I saw a notice pinned to a pillar in the middle of the room. I pulled it down and read it aloud; "the fawn Tumnus is hereby charged with high treason against her imperial majesty Jadis, Queen of Narnia, for comforting our enemy and fraternising with humans. Signed Maugrim, captain of the secret police. Long live the queen." "Alright. Now we really should go back," said Susan. "But what about Mr. Tumnus!?" Lucy cried. "If he was arrested for just being with a human, I don't think there's much we can do," said Susan. "You don't understand, do you?" Lucy said, "I'm the human. She must have found out he helped me." "Maybe we could call the police," said Peter, trying to be sensible. "These are the police," said Susan. "Don't worry, Lu, we'll think of something," said Peter. I was thinking fast about what we could do, so I stayed silent. "Why? I mean, he's a criminal," said Edmund.
Then, out of nowhere, we heard a tweet and then a "psst!" "Did that bird just 'psst' us?" Asked Susan. "I think it did," I said. "Let's follow it! It obviously wants to tell us something!" I ran out of the door and went to the bird. The others followed behind. Suddenly the bird flew off and we heard a rustling in the bushes nearby. I took a few steps back and we all looked at that bush, wondering what could be in it. Suddenly a beaver popped his head out. "A beaver?" Lucy said in disbelief. Peter tried to entice it over by saying "here, boy. Here, boy," and clicking to it while holding his hand out. "Peter, if a bird just 'psst-ed' us, then that beaver can probably talk!" I said. "I ain't gonna smell it, if that's what you want," said the beaver to Peter. "I told you," I said. "Oh, sorry," said Peter as Lucy giggled. "Lucy Pevensie?" asked the beaver. "Yes?" Lucy said, going slowly over to him. The beaver handed her a hanky. "That's the hanky I gave to Mr-" "Tumnus," said the beaver, cutting in. "He got it to me just before they took 'im," he said. "Is he alright?" Asked Lucy. "Further in," said the beaver. He galloped off. Peter, Lucy and I started following him. Susan grabbed my shoulder. "What are you doing?" She hissed. "Yeah, how do we know we can trust him?" Said Edmund. "He said he knows the fawn," said Peter. "He's a beaver. He shouldn't be saying anything," retorted Susan. The beaver popped his head out again from on top of a snowdrift. "Everything alright?" He asked. "Yes, we were just talking," said Peter quickly. "That's better left for safer places," whispered the beaver. "He means the trees," Lucy explained in a whisper. We decided to follow the beaver.
We trudged through the snow for a good while, but the snow seemed dry, not wet, so our socks and shoes weren't soaking, which I found unusual because normally snow back home, (it rarely snowed) was wet and soggy, but this snow seemed like it had been here for years.
