APRIL 1, 1983 IN SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA
THIRD PERSON P.O.V. "i feel so good, i feel so fine; i love that little lady, she's always on my mind..."
black sabbath's 'sabbra cadabra' had been blaring throughout a certain curly haired guitarist's room, and that certain curly haired guitarist just so happened to be the one and only kirk hammett. the boy - well, he was now technically a man, as he was 20 years old already, but he's just too baby for that - had grown quite bored, so he decided to crank up some black sabbath and jam out.
"gives me lovin' every night and day; never gonnaleave her, never goin' away..."
goodness, how kirk longed for someone like that. yeah, he loved playing lead guitar for exodus, but he felt like something was missing in his life. someone was missing in his life, but he had no idea who, and he needed to find out. yeah, it definitely sounds cheesy, but kirk's a hopeless romantic; he can't help it.
"someone to love me; you know she makes me feel alright!"
"kirk!" when the boy heard his name called, kirk quickly rushed over to his record player and turned it off. he then turned to his bedroom door to see his little sister, jennifer, standing in the doorway. "oh, hey jen; whatcha need?" kirk asked, walking over to her. "mom picked up the phone and apparently, somebody's calling for you," she told her older brother, making him raise a brow. "did you get the name of the person?"
"uh, some dude named james," jennifer responded, making kirk even more confused. weird, he didn't know anybody named james? "alright, thanks for letting me know - kitchen, right?" he asked, and jennifer nodded. kirk nodded as well before walking out to the kitchen, and he smiled when he saw his mom standing there, holding the phone. "it's for you, hun," his mother, chefela, told him gently before handing him the phone, which he thanked her for.
"hello?" "hello, this is james hetfield from metallica, if you've ever heard of us," a male voice said from the other line. "hell yeah, of course i have!" kirk said with a smile. "great! now, we're kicking out our current lead guitarist, but a friend of mine, eighton, suggested that maybe we could hire you to be the new lead guitarist, so maybe in a few days you can come out here to new york to audition?" james asked, and kirk took a few moments to let this all sink in. he didn't know a leighton, so she must've been an exodus fan; that was good. but he was being offered to go to fucking new york to audition for metallica? yeah, this was definitely going to take a few days of thinking.
"i'll definitely consider it, but i'll need about 2 days to think about it; call me up again sometime around 3 pm pacific time on the 3rd and i'll have an answer for you," kirk responded. "sounds great man; you have a great day. bye," james said before hanging up, kirk doing the same.
the lead guitarist took a deep breath; holy shit, that was quite a bit thrown at him at once. "hey mom, is it cool if we talk?" he asked his mother, who was now sitting in the living room. "oh, of course honey," chefela responded and patted the seat next to her, which kirk took. "so i was just offered by some dude from metallica to go down to new york in a few days and audition for their band, cause they're apparently kicking out their lead guitarist, and some chick they know suggested me to them," the boy told chefela. "i really want to go up to new york and do it, cause things aren't going super great with exodus right now, but i'll really miss you and jen if i do leave for new york."
"kirk, honey, this is a big opportunity. you've been very vocal about the problems surrounding exodus as of recent, and in my opinion, i think you should leave exodus and go audition for metallica. they do seem to have a great deal of potential, and i know you love that in a band, so i feel that you should definitely do it. you can always call home anytime; you know that, kirk," chefela told her son, and kirk smiled at her. "thanks for the advice, mom; i'll think about it," he said before standing up and walking back to his room.
"new york, huh? that's pretty big; you should definitely do it," jennifer told her brother as she passed him while he was walking to his room. "jen, i'm still gonna think about it, but i'll most likely do it," kirk responded before closing the door to his bedroom.
APRIL 3RD, 1983 IN SAN FRACISCO, CALIFORNIA kirk had been pacing around the kitchen for a few minutes now; he was expecting a call any minute now. when the phone finally rang, he practically leaped to the phone and picked up almost immediately.
he had indeed made his decision.
"so, what's your answer, man?" "what day are you thinking of auditioning? i'm gonna fly out there soon," kirk said. "hell yeah, that's great! i think we'll hold the audition on the 11th, if that's alright," james responded. "sounds great, i'll fly out there soon and meet up with you guys then. i'm super stoked, bro!" the curly haired guitarist said excitedly. "so are we! we'll see ya in about a week; good luck," james said and hung up, which kirk did as well.
"i'm going to new york... holy shit, i'm going to new york!" kirk said excitedly. "yeah, no need to rub it in our faces," jennifer teased her brother, snickering a bit before giving him a quick side hug. jennifer and chefela had both been in the kitchen when kirk took the call.
"oh, we're so proud of you, honey," chefela said, giving her son a hug and kiss on the cheek. "thanks mom; i really hope this all works out."
little did kirk know, he'd just made the best and most important decision of his entire life.
