There was just silence as I walked down Harry's stairs after putting Gabe to bed. I could see my best friend clutching on to Darrius who was more pissed off than anything. I turned to see Chris coddling Marcus but Harry...I never seen him so rattled. He usually had a rock-solid confident demeanor but it was replaced with fear as he stood and just looked over at his boyfriend.
Everyone's eyes turned to me as I entered back into the living room and said, "Gabe is down for the night, so we can talk now."
There was still not a word. I wasn't looking for Marcus to say much considering he hadn't spoken since I picked him up after work. I had explained the situation to everyone but no one wanted to show their real emotions in front of Gabe. Now, I was just waiting for the bomb to go off.
"We need to call the police," Harry frantically spoke first, "Let them know what's going on."
"Marcus told me it won't matter," I clarified, "He has always gotten off from his charges."
"Well we can't sit here and wait like some fucking idiots!"
"Harry," Chris spoke up, "Baby please sit down."
"No," he shouted, "Something has to be done!"
"Don't you think we know that?" I answered him, "The guy obviously has connections and whose to say if we go up there that a crooked cop won't go back and tell him. Then what Harry?"
He wanted to say something else. Maybe even just yell out of frustration but he held himself together. I turned my attention towards Caleb again and it broke my heart to see them going through this literally two weeks before their wedding. Even though Darrius's life was on the line, he still was trying to comfort Caleb as he cried on his shoulder. Darrius wiped away his boyfriend's tears before speaking, "This is such bullshit."
"I know," I responded but he didn't take too kindly to my answer as he gave me a sideways look, "Really? This coming from the person that should have treated my brother right in the first place."
"Darrius," Chris chimed warningly, "Let's not bring up that please."
I didn't answer back considering I knew this was his way of being scared. I just stood down as he continued, "Naw let's do it! Because if he would have, none of us would be in this mess."
"You can't place blame on someone like that! Evan didn't know what to do at that time and you can't say that this is all his fault. You know it's not fair!"
"This isn't fucking fair!" He yelled trying to keep his voice from cracking, "I'm supposed to get married in two weeks. That's was the only thing I was supposed to be fucking thinking about and now this shit?"
He stopped before speaking under his breath, "I knew I should have stuck to my instinct when I first saw him."
"No!" Chris stood up walking up to his best friend and getting down on his knee. He took his face into his hands and affirmed, "This isn't your fault either. No one here is at fault."
He came back up on his feet to look at all of us and continued, "The only person that everyone should blame is Corey. He decided to put his hands-on Marcus and threaten us. This is what he wants. He wants us to fight with each other so it can be easier for us to get caught up and he can attack us."
"No," Marcus weakly spoke up. Everyone turned their eyes at him as he sat up, "He has nothing against you guys. Well except maybe Chris."
"What did he do?" Harry asked turning to his boyfriend. Chris's bright eyes turned down as everyone looked around confused as he confessed, "I may have let my anger get the best of me and I injured Corey."
