The Early Catch

Chapter Two

Alexa's POV

It has been weeks since the first day and everything seems normal thus far. The number of 'sympathizers' concerning my old relationship has drastically died down and I have almost totally forgotten about Blake.

I still see him around school, this one time I saw him run off into the library with Maria. Only God knows what fornicating act they were about to get themselves into this time. Tch.

I run into the new guy a lot and it is starting to get weird. We sort of just stare at each other for a split second and look away. I still do not know his name.

'Dude I'm imagining Mr Saheed with a bra, hilarious'
Jorja passes me a note in the middle of the tiresome Biology class.
I giggle, it would be funny if he showed up with a bra.

'His massive man boobs will finally get some support lmao'
I write back and pass the note to Jorja.

Writing back and forth Jorja is the only thing that is preventing me from drifting into sleep.

'What is Ecology? Anyone?' the Biology teacher asks the obviously bored class, interrupting my discussion with Jorja.

It makes me uncomfortable when a teacher asks a question and everyone just stares, must be tough being a teacher. Teenagers these days are really hard to handle.

For a full minute, the only sound that can be heard is the overhead fan, squeaking.

'Um, I think it's like a branch of biology dealing with the relationships of organisms with their environment and with each other basically.' I say to break the silence of the class.

'Thank you Alexa, moving on' the Biology teacher says.

No one in my class puts in effort to learning and it sucks because they see me as some nerd, which in fact I'm not.

After answering the question I zone out of the lecture.

The class is finally over and I am about to leave for lunch with Jorja when Mr Saheed, the Biology teacher cuts me off.

'Miss Greens, I would like to see you' he says sternly.

Jorja mouths a 'sorry man' and walks out of the class. The worst thing ever is for the teacher asking to 'see you'.

I walk grudgingly to his table side.

'Yes Mr Saheed?' I murmur.

'You have been an exceptional student Alexa, I would like you to consider joining the Science club.' he says with little to no emotion on his face. Typical Mr Saheed, always looking for new recruits to his weird science club.

'Thank you sir, I am quite flattered but I'm actually looking at a career in acting so I don't think that would be of any help to me' I tell him off.

'I saw that reply coming, that was why I had a talk with the school's principal. I have direct orders from him. You are required to attend at least three club meetings before turning down the offer' he says with a confident smirk.

This man has to be kidding me, what the heck does he think he's doing, trying to recruit me to nerd town? No freaking way.

'Is that even allowed? Is that ethical?' I bellowed.

'Well, you'll have to ask the principal that yourself' he replies coyly.

This man is really adamant. Getting the principal involved is a very petty thing to do and suddenly I feel like I shouldn't have answered his question in class and instead leave him staring at our faces.

'I'll come, because of the 'orders' I air quoted. 'But after that I'm done, I really have no interest.' I sigh.

'We will see about that' he said with a grin. This man is so weird.

'We have a meeting right after the last period, I'll be expecting you.' he finalizes.

'Sure, whatever.' I stand up and leave, my mood ruined.

                                 ***

                            at lunch

'Lexi, over here!' Jorja bellows from a table right in the middle of the cafeteria. There are quite a number of characters on the table with her. Acquaintances to me, friends to her. Hello social anxiety.

I walk up to the table, holding my lunch tray tight, with a queasy feeling inside.

'Hey guys.' I say as I finally reach the table.

I got a few 'hellos' and 'hi Alexa' mumbled back.
I sit down in a spot closest to Jorja and start eating.

'Alexa, play me Savage by Megan thee Stallion' a voice says with a laugh behind me.

I know that voice, Kimberly.

'You little piece of shit' I say laughing. I stand up and give her a giant hug.

Kimberly is one of my few friends in school, she is supposed to be in California with her sick mom and now she's here, randomly showing up in the middle of lunch.

'Why the heck are you here??' I ask so excited.

'Mom has gotten a lot better and she says I shouldn't miss out on quality education with quality friendships.' she says in a voice, probably meant to mimick her mom.

'Awesome! I am so happy for you.' I laugh and give her another hug.

'How's school without me? Suckish I hope' she says laughing.

'You hope? So evil' I joke. 'School's school baby, just thee regular day to day running into teachers with midlife crises and teenagers with hormonal imbalances.' I smile.

'Yup, you're still you, with your weird ass way of speaking' she chuckles and sits right in the middle of Jorja and I.

Jorja hadn't even noticed her because she was busy flirting with her prey of the week; Benny Jones, a guy for the science club, probably to get him do all her assignments or something.

'Hey rude much?' Jorja says thinking a rando just came to sit in between us but then immediately turns her head in Kim's direction and freezes.

'Kimmmmmmm' she screams and half of the cafeteria turn their heads in our direction.
'Yup, still loud' Kim says laughing. 'I guess nothing has changed in my absence.'

Kimberly completes our little trio. Jorja, Kimberly and Alexa. 

The bell goes off signaling the end of the lunch hour.

'Let's all hang out after school today, we could all go to my place, my mom'll make cupcakes' Jorja says as she stands to leave.

'No can do man, Saheed's making me join the science club. They meet after school.' I say frustrated as I'm reminded of the stupid deal I made with the Biology teacher.

'Ewww.' Kim and Jorja say in unison and laugh at the ridiculousness.

'Get out of that as soon as you can love, the science geeks suck' Jorja finally says.

'That's the plan.' I sigh. This all really sucks.
