When Ema re-entered the small bar she was sitting in, having just finished her phone call with Jay, she took one look at the woman she was drinking with and burst into a fit of uncontrollable laughter. Her friend raised an eyebrow. She only laughed harder. Regaining her breath minutes later, Ema returned to her stool and called for another round of drinks, arm resting on the polished wood of the bar.
Her friend continued to eye her, though glanced away to take a swig from her refilled glass. "Entertaining phone call?"
Ema took a drink of her own to hide her laughter. "You're going to love this one," she said. "I've been hired to track you down."
Her friend's ruby eyes filled with humour. "Is that so?" she asked, not bothering to hide a small laugh. "Why would anyone be searching for me?"
"Apparently, should I find you, I'd also find Nephthys Topanga." Ema took another drink. "It seems she's freed one of those Frozen Ones that most definitely do not exist."
"Ah. Of course." Her friend smirked at the obvious sarcasm, her dark-skinned hand pushing her star-white hair from her face. "I knew this would happen sooner or later."
"You did?" Ema asked, surprised. "I thought you were over this whole Forgotten War thing."
"I am," she agreed. "I would like nothing more than to never be involved with it again."
"And yet," Ema said, swirling the maroon contents of her glass, "here we are, solving our problems through alcohol." She lifted her glass in salute then knocked the entire thing back with one mouthful. "Oh, the simple things in life."
"Are you going to tell them?"
Ema gave her friend a sidelong glance. "After you saved me?" She shook her head. "I wouldn't do that."
"What are you going to do?"
"That depends." She snapped her fingers, pointing at her now-empty glass. It was refilled in seconds by the bartender. "How would you like to go on a hunt with me for Nephthys and this Frozen One she's supposedly traveling with?"
Her friend offered a small smile. "Sounds enjoyable."
