Dragged between two guards, Dex was tossed into one of the cells beneath the Palace. Pushing himself to his hands and knees, he made a point to curse them several times before spitting in their direction. The guards either didn't notice or didn't care as the returned to their positions. Dex convinced his legs to work on their own and walked to the hard wooden bed nailed to the wall. With nothing better to do, he sat, resting his head in his hands. What had happened?
One moment he'd been watching Nephthys, the very woman who had taken him in, shoot both Jay and Troy. The next, he was being dug out of the rubble of the collapsed Vivus dorm - he had no memory of that happening - by two men who then brought him to the Palace. He'd been handed over to the two guards that just left and brought to this . . . place. He sighed.
Had Nephthys abandoned him? Dex was beginning to believe so. Or, perhaps, something had happened which made her leave so suddenly. In that case, would she come back for him as she always did, or would she be too focused on her new play thing, the Princess? He was quite sure she'd been taken.
Dex sighed again. He really had no way of knowing.
"If you're going to sigh all day, could you do it a little quieter? You're giving me a headache."
Dex looked up at the male's voice. He wasn't alone here. A man was watching him through the magic-infused bars.
"Bit old for an Academy student," the man continued. "You look my age."
"How old would that be?" Dex asked.
"Little over five thousand."
"Then I am your age."
The man laughed. "So, you the guy behind the disaster at the Academy?"
"How did-"
"Got nothing better to do than listen to the guards gossip," the man said, tapping one of his ears. "Hear the place got blown up real good. Enjoy yourself?"
"It was pretty fun," he admitted.
"Good lad." The man returned to his own bed, resting his hands behind his head. "Always impressive when someone outsmarts Topanga."
Dex moved closer, unable to top his curiosity. "Who are you?"
"Someone who was thrown in here a while back and forgotten." His smile was sinister. "Guess you could say I'm Topanga's worst enemy."
"I thought that was the Dark King."
"I'm far worse than that letdown. Though, I suppose we are both in the vengeance and power games," he said after a while. "You were just vengeance. Ilsbrook, yeah?"
Dex nodded.
"Too bad what happened there. I liked that city. Always made the best twisters at the pub. Just can't get a decent one anywhere anymore."
Dex was in awe. "Who are you?"
"Name's Kek," the man said.
Why was that name familiar?
Before Dex could think about it more, he found himself face-to-face with the man. "Want to cause some real trouble for our captors?" he asked. "It'll be fun and they'll never see it coming."
It didn't matter who this man was. If he was against Amneris, then that was good enough for him. Dex grinned. "What's the plan?"
