vanessa finished reading dylan's letter and was astonished that he actually agreed to being acquaintances. she only has one shot and she's not going to screw this up by being her socially awkward self so she has to seem confident in these letters. again, she retrieved a piece of cardstock paper and a glittery pen.

dylan's dad chose to pickup the mail this morning because he was waiting for an important document from his work that he needed to frame. he scanned through the mail and examined each letter and bill. he was appalled to see a letter addressed for his son.
he walked back inside the house and called for his wife to see that the letter delivered to dylan was from a girl who he hadn't known. to be frank, the only girls he knew that was dylan's friends were lola, malina, and avi. but a girl the name of vanessa? he didn't have a clue.
his wife said she recognized that name from somewhere but could not remember where she saw it. dylan's dad walked up the stairs ready to question the young teenage boy who this mystery girl was and why she was sending him a letter.
dylan heard three knocks on his door before it was gently opened by his father. prentending he was asleep under the covers, his dad sat on the bed beside him and softly shook the boy awake. dylan used his superb acting skills and 'woke up' sleepily.
"good morning dad, what's up?" dylan asked while rubbing his eyes. his voice still raspy and cracked. "hey son, i picked up the mail this morning and while looking through the bills i noticed a letter addressed to you. do you know anyone named vanessa bowen?" his dad asked
shit. what should he say? the truth? they'd probably get mad if they knew he was pen pals with some girl from california thousands of miles away. but what if he doesn't tell them the whole truth . . .
"oh yeah haha she's from one of my old acting classes! we became friends a while back." he tried covering it up by laughing awkwardly which his dad thought was a little suspicious but since dylan was an actor he believed it. he hated lying but technically they are friends so it wasn't a complete lie.
dylan thanked his dad for handing the letter to him and the moment his dad closed his bedroom door he pulled the letter out of the envelope then read. dear dylan . . .
