After the conversation with Zach, I found Nicole beckoning me over in the distance.

"If you don't like him, why are you dating him?" Nicole asked bluntly as soon as I was within earshot.

I frowned. "We're not dating."

"Uh-huh," Nicole snorted sarcastically, "like I would buy your obvious lie."

"Gosh, Nicole! I've told you like a thousand time that I do not like Zach, and we are not dating!"

"Whatever you say, but everybody has been talking gossip recently; it's not just me thinking this way." Nicole shrugged and crossed her arms.

I clapped a hand to my forehead and ran it down my face. Why did everything have to be so complicated?

"Listen, Nicole, I go out with Zach not because I have a crush on him, but because he likes me. Well, he is really nice to me and I want to be nice to him too; I treat him as a friend but nothing more."

I concluded while simultaneously studying Nicole's countenance. To my surprise, I found a playful smile tugging at her lips. A creepy chill was sent down my spine at the sight of that smile; it had never meant something good.

"Beware. Usually, things don't turn out well when you treat each other unfairly."

My brows knitted together even more. "Unfairly? What do you mean? I try  to be nice to him as hard as I can!"

"That's what you are convinced of. It doesn't mean that he thinks of everything the same way as you do."

Nicole shifted her weight from one foot to another, appearing to be impatient about the fact that I couldn't see this simple and evident truth.

I shuddered to think of what could possibly happen when Zach hated my guts and couldn't help but wonder whether it would be better if I declined his invitation in the first place.

What were done couldn't be undone, though.
