Real, genuine shock and fear broke through Alice’s system. She became rigid, frozen like a statue. Not a single twitch of the limbs, not one blink of the eye or a rise of the chest as she stared down at the infected vampire that the werewolves had caught drunkenly crashing through the forest.
She had failed.
She had wrongfully thought that she had eradicated the disease with the death of her soulmate and her brother.
How stupid it was to think that her beloved Bella was the only one Jane had infected!
Piping hot rage replaced the shock and fear as her entire body began to shake. She was no longer in control. She couldn’t see the future and she didn’t have Bella by her side.
Throwing back her head, she let out a loud roar of pure anguish and defeat. It was so powerful and raw that the wolves in her company could not help but to reiterate it with their own howls, the night air filled with pain and sorrow.
“I cannot believe this is happening!” she shrieked, the pitch of her voice cracked the bark of several trees nearby. The vampire that Jacob was pinning down struggled and snarled, snapping its teeth, drool sliding down its chin. Its gleaming red eyes were trained on Alice’s and she recognised the look of pure hunger. This vampire was eager for her blood.
Alice looked away and gritted her teeth, reminded painfully of Bella’s final moments.
She heard the familiar bone crunching snap that meant Jacob had finally locked his jaws around the infected vampire’s head. When she turned around, all that was left of the body was shards of dust, glittering across the earth.
Panic was starting to make itself known now as Alice paced, barely a blur. How many more vampires were infected? This could possibly be an epidemic. How is it that she hadn’t had any visions about this?
Do the Volturi know about this disaster?
She had so many questions and yet was itching for action. She couldn’t stand by and let this happen. There had to be a way to eradicate this virus, not only for the welfare of her own species, but also for the humans that they lived alongside.
“What the hell is going on, Alice?” Jacob’s low voice caused her to jump violently and at the speed that she was pacing meant that she travelled a lot higher than intended, almost cracking her skull on a tree branch above her. The wolves just watched her impatiently, also pacing agitatedly. They could sense her distress.
“Do you remember what happened to…Bella?” Alice asked hesitantly. The werewolf’s eyes flashed dangerously but he merely nodded, leaning against a tree with his arms crossed against his bare chest. His nakedness was barely noticed at this point in time.
“I idiotically assumed that the vampire that had infected Bella had only infected her. Tonight has proved me wrong.”
“So let me get this straight, when Bella was… like this,” he gestured to the remains of the dead vampire. “She had also infected other blood suckers?”
Alice hadn’t thought of that either and she groaned loudly.
“Of course! She and Edward and Jane must have! I just thought that Bella and Edward hadn’t had enough time to as Bella was only infected for… such a short time,” Alice’s voice cracked and anger shot through her once again. She furiously punched a tree resulting in a sound like thunder and making some of the wolves whine.
“So what do we do? I have killed hundreds of these trespassers in Forks!” Jacob exclaimed.
“Hundreds?” Alice hissed. “Please tell me you’re joking.”
