Pure agony raced through heated veins, burning warmth trying desperately to flow through an un-beating heart. Bella couldn’t believe the pain she was enduring. The only experience she had even close to this, was when she was turned into a vampire. However, even that pain hadn’t been quite as sharp as this. It went on and on, never seeming to cease. Time meant nothing to her as it felt as if her brain was trying to explode inside of her head. Memories occasionally flashed against her eyelids but she was too distraught to examine them properly.

It could have been minutes, hours, months, years. Bella wanted to scream and writhe but she subconsciously knew that her body was immobilised. She couldn’t have moved it even if she had tried. Panic and fear were the only prominent emotions in her chest. She hadn’t a clue on what was happening, how she had got like this, whether it would last forever.

The pain was nearing a peak now and Bella found herself wishing for death. Anything that would escape her from this agonising torture.

And then…

It was gone.

Disappeared without a trace. For a moment, Bella could think of nothing except for pure shock, half expecting the pain to come back.

But it didn’t.

She still couldn’t move her body, her mind floating in deep space. She wasn’t even aware of her limbs yet, the only thing that was catching her attention was the dull ache deep within her chest.

Suddenly, a strange prickling sensation started in her fingertips, slowly moving its way up to her palms, to her wrists. It was uncomfortable, as if she had been laying in the one spot for thousands of years and the blood was finally tracing her veins.

Somewhere in the back of her mind, she knew that she was still an undead creature. Her heart was not beating and she didn’t feel the need to breathe, her chest never once rising in the tell-tale sign of a pulse.

The prickling sensation continued, travelling up her forearms, to her shoulders and down her chest. Bella was starting to notice faint rustling noises, which startled her. She had been hearing nothing for the entire duration of the pain and so the new sounds scared her slightly. Traces of damp earth reached her nostrils, rewarding her with unexpected excitement now. She was becoming more aware of her body.

She was alive!

Impatiently, Bella waited as more and more feeling came back to her. Down her hips, to her legs and finally, her toes. She wiggled them experimentally and when they responded, she wanted to yell in glee. The smell of rain was becoming more prominent now and she found herself revelling in the scent, as if she hadn’t experienced it in a lifetime.

She could hear the sounds of water falling into the earth around her, feel the wet ground beneath her back, experiencing the sludge of mud in-between her fingers.

And then it happened.

Her eyes shot open of their own accord and Bella choked back a sob as a dark-grey sky gazed down upon her. Droplets of rain landed on her face, cool and refreshing and she blinked rapidly, hardly daring to believe her luck.

The first thing she noticed was how acute her senses had become. As a vampire, everything had already been heightened, but this new experience was beyond that. She could literally feel the earth beneath her breathing, moving, the creatures living in its soil creeping and crawling as Mother Nature intended. She could feel every one of the raindrops that landed on her skin, hear the faint splash as they came into contact with the ground. It was indescribable and for a moment, Bella merely pulled herself into a sitting position, gazing at her surroundings with brand new eyes.
