When beginning a story, don't start it off boring, and by that I mean to not start it off lightly. You need to start it off with action and something interesting to keep your readers. For example, notice the difference between:
My alarm clock rung loudly as I stood up groggily from bed. I walked outside my house's balcony and the wind swept my hair to the side, making my skin shiver with the cold winter wind...
VS.
I fix my hair and clothes as I run quickly through the large crowds of people in the street. I bump into many people and some look at me like if I'm crazy, but I don't care. I'm late again and my parents won't ever forgive me...
Notice the difference?
It's better to start off strong than soft. That way many people will be intrigued as to why there's so much tension. This will keep them interested and reading.
They both have lots of detail and both create an image, but only one makes you think "why?" Why are they late? And what are they late for? School? And important event? A meeting?
It sparks up more questions than a paragraph that's all about how someone woke up.
And this is only for the beginning of the story, because this is how you're going to introduce your writing to your readers. So as the book goes on it's okay to write "soft paragraphs" as your chapter starter.
The first paragraph/chapter is everything when you start off a story.
