Our world doesn't do Sweet 16's. We call them Sweat 16's. Instead, on every kid's sixteenth birthday, we got ranks. It's natural to be nervous when you get your rank.
Today was my 16th birthday. That means I get assigned. Blue is seeker, red is hider. My name is Isabella Stewarts. I live in a world that's... interesting. It's overpopulated, so the government assigns every sixteen-year-old on their birthday their rank (hiders and seekers). My whole family consists of seekers so I should be one too, right? Even if I was hider I'm sure they'd protect me... Right?
I sat down in the nearest seat as soon as I got there. I was late by 4 minutes but I'm sure no one noticed. I jinxed myself.
"You're late." I heard a whisper. I turned to my right.
"I- You- Okay yeah," I admitted.
"My name's Angelica, but you can call me Annie, Ann, so on." She reached her hand out. Hesitantly, I shook it.
"Isabella, you can call me Isa."
I never knew there were this many people who shared the same birthday with me. The current boy on stage received his tag. I caught a glimpse of the red ribbon he was holding. When he turned to get off the stage he looked like he was on the verge of tears.
"Stewarts, Isabella." She announced.
I turned to Angelica "Wish me luck," I whispered.
I hope I don't look nervous. I could already feel the sweat boiling down my forehead. I'm not even sure why I was nervous. Obviously, I'll get seeker. My family, they're all seekers.
Nonetheless, It's my turn to get a rank.
