"Cyanide poisoning?" The lab results had finally come back a few hours later. To say I was surprised by the results was an understatement.
"Well, that and another unknown chemical that made it slow to ubsorb into the bloodstream." Pearson had decided to stay at the hospital after his shift was up to get the results.
"I thought they said it was a small dose. The numbers were so low, a man of his size should have gotten mildly sick, not go into full-blown cardiac arrest." Augustine, who was called immediately following the incident, was noticeably upset as well.
"The doctor said it was from his weakened immune system. A guy his size would have only experienced blackouts and a little sickness, but where he has been letting himself go since the accident, it overwhelmed his body and took over instead of metabolizing away." That gave me an idea.
"Has the coroner checked Mom for any kind of poisoning?" I asked
"You think they were both poisoned?" Pearson asked.
"Just think about it." I started "Have you seen the vehicle they drove? How bad was the wreak? If they were both poisoned, it would make sense why Dad crossed the line and hit the other car. He could have just passed out, while Mom would have died due to her small size." It was all starting to make sense.
"That would explain a lot of things. " Augustine said while Pearson chewed over my words.
"By golly you're right Sydney! I've gotta go, I'll check back in when I know more." Detective Pearson exclaimed while hurriedly picking up his coat and going out the door. Right before it closed, he turned back and looked at me. "You'd make a fine detective Sydney." And then, he was gone.
"You'd better get some sleep. I'll go talk to the doctors to see if they have any new ideas as to what the other chemical is."
"Okay." I said half heartedly. "I'm just gonna hop in the shower first." He nodded in answer and stood, heading for the door.
"I'll grab a cot for you." He called over his shoulder.
"Thanks." I wanted so badly to ask him about his past experience with hospitals, but now just didn't seem like a good time. So, grabbing my bag, I walked over to the private bathroom joined to the room to wash the day away.

"That was some night!" Exclaimed my father as he continued home. "Honey, are you alright?"
I could see from my seat in the back of our family SUV, my mother suddenly hunch over.
"Mom! Are you okay?" I didn't receive a response. "Dad, what's wrong with Mom?" Turning my head I could see my father starting to swerve. "Dad?"
I received a gargled responce. "Tr.. Tracy..."
"Dad! Look out!" I didn't have time to act, as two blinding lights zeroed in on us.
Author's Note
Sorry it was so short. The next chapter will be a lot longer, and a little bit of Augustine's past will revealed. Maybe then we will see what makes him so cold and distant.
