I gasp for air.
My palms go wide attempting to grab hold of something... anything.
Again I gasp, making a sputtering sound, but something keeps me from taking in a full breath.
I attempt to sit, but I remain unmoved.
My body is at odds with my mind and I'm only vaguely aware of the panic that seems to rise and fall with my consciousness.
My chest and lungs throb from an invisible layer that seems to press me down.
My eyes go wide and the whole room spins as I look out through the tears that stream down my face.
Eyes burning and blurred vision keep me from seeing just where I am.
A cold sweat breaks out along my neck, and I can't bite back the horror that is surging.
My mind tries to wrap itself around what must be going on....
But I am only sure of one thing.....
I AM DYING!
Then I hear them—
Muffled voices coming toward me, but they stop in a far corner of the room.
Dizziness crashes against me again and again as I try to focus in on them.
I can almost make sense of the words that I hear.
But they are so distant now.

"She seems to be struggling with the change in altitude.... you are aware that the majority of them are unable to adapt to the change." The tone of the woman's voice and her use of the word them causes a pit to open in my stomach.
"That should not be anything for the Vatron to consider. The Omeg incarnate has chosen this female as his Craya... you will stabilize her...."
I think I should feel relief at the woman's concern, but her words sink in. And I am aware that something has gone terribly wrong.Hands pull at my shirt.
Something that feels vaguely like a weighted blanket is placed over my chest and face...It moves up and down mimicking breathing.
A fine mist fills the inside, and the condensation gathers on my face and eyelashes.
Small droplets trail down my neck, and I notice a dampness in my clothing.
Slowly my breaths go from ragged to steady.
After what might be a few minutes, I breathe easier and allow myself to settle.
I feel a small painful jab at my arm, and my brain recognizes it as an injection.
Cold runs through my veins, and a metallic taste forms in my mouth.
Too soon, I am engulfed in darkness... fading into sleep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I don't know how long I've been out.... when I come to, but my eyes open slowly.
The brightness of the room is still too much, and I cover my eyes with my forearm to stop their watering.
An automatic door opens and a woman passes through.
She is tall and unusually slender.
Her hair is crystal white and her eyes are haunting... almost as if they have no color at all.
I startle at the unexpected sight.
She speaks to someone just outside the door, and I recognize the voice from earlier.
"Her vitals are stable."
The voice holds no warmth and does little to comfort me.
"Hello..." I try to say, but it comes out in a whisper.
She doesn't seem to hear me as she checks the device I am hooked to.
Alarm rushes through my body as I see it. The device is unlike any technology I am sure that exists. I splash as my body jerks with alarm.
She notices my shock and pats my shoulder.
"Remain calm, I mean you no harm.... you are important to our people."
Her words elicit more fear, and I squirm trying to sit up, but my body does not obey.
"You may not enter at this time, High Son."
"Move." A low guttural voice grits out in response to the woman. "I will be the first thing she sees when her eyes open."
The sound of automatic doors and quick, heavy footsteps move toward me.
Relief washes over me as I find the bluest eyes I've ever known.
