after all of ainsley’s classes, she got her book bag out of her locker and waited for that stupid jock, who’s name she didn’t even know. he showed up about ten minutes after the bell, his friends gone now. she spoke before he got a word in. “first of all, i don’t even know your name and you don’t know mine. i’m ainsley.” he smirked, his arms folded. “i’m jason. now where’s my pot?” ainsley sighed. “i know a person. my friend nathan. grows his own.” jason looks interested. “how much?” she looked at her phone, nathan had texted her his fee for the best pot he had. “roughly $200 for great pot.”
he scoffed. “thats nothing. give me his number.”
so she did, and jason strutted off, leaving ainsley feeling confused about her first day at this school. she heaved her bookbag up on her shoulder and walked out to her old car she’d gotten last year after saving since she was eight. ainsley got in the car and started the engine, wondering where she was going to go until she had to go home. she decided to drive around and explore the town, taking advantage of the alone time to actually enjoy a cigarette.
she found an old bookstore and decided to look around. it had an interesting vibe, all old book smell and cozy. a bell dinged when she opened the door, and a little old lady came over.
“hello dear! how are you today? don’t get many customers of your age these days; what brings you in?” ainsley shook her hand before saying “i’m new here, i decided to look around and see what the town is like.” the lady’s face lit up like christmas. “so glad to have you here. would you like a tour of the place?” ainsley nodded. the lady was so delighted she didn’t know where to take her next.
“what’s your name, sweetie?”
“ainsley, ainsley sorenson.”
“lovely to meet you dear. i’m daisy.”
“nice to meet you.” the lady had to be at least 70. being around her made ainsley feel guilty for having smoked a cig not ten minutes before meeting her. daisy took her around the whole store before bringing ainsley back around to the front of the store. “come back in soon, dear! it was so nice having some company once in a while…” daisy trailed off. “do you not get very many customers?” ainsley asked. “oh no, dear. we’ve lost a lot of business since that big bookstore nobles, i’m not sure what the name is…”
“barnes & noble?” ainsley prompted. “that’s the one, thank you dear.” ainsley looked at the clock on the wall. she had been there for an hour, talking with daisy, and looking at the cluttered shelves and leather bound books. “well i better go.” daisy smiled, and grasped ainsley’s hand. “come back soon, ainsley. bye bye now!” ainsley waved goodbye, and walked out the door, the bell dinging pleasantly behind her.
daisy reminded her of the perfect image of a grandma. ainsley’s grandparents had all died when she was young, so she had never had a person like that. daisy made her happy, and reminded her of warm cookies fresh out the oven. ainsley got back in her car, and decided to drive home.
