"oi, want a shotgun kiss?" is the first thing i hear as i open up my algebra textbook.

i sigh as i slowly close the dark green, beaten up cover, knowing that we aren't going to get any work done tonight. which is a shame, considering the fact that we're both failing the class.

as I set the book onto the coffee table to the left of me, i speak.

"no," i simply reply, but then i feel like o shouldn't have shot him down so fast, i don't even know what a shotgun kiss is. so, i ask him: "what does that even mean?"

he lets out a chuckle as he turns away from me to put his cigarette out on the ashtray, which is coincidentally on the same table as my book. the room is filled with silence for a second, the only sound being dexys midnight runners "come on eileen" softly playing in the kitchen as he watches the last few ashes fall before smashing the cigarette into the tray.

"oh, al," he coos, as he finishes smashing the cigarette and grabs a new one from the pack sitting next to my book.

his voice is calm, but I'm not.

you see, he's always been my best friend. we met in year 5 and we've stuck together since. when we met, we didn't have too many things in common, except for our taste for old music. he tends to listen to old rock songs, while i prefer a song with a happy tone, hence the song i put in the cassette player in the kitchen.

but lately, it seems like we're drifting apart, he's not at school a lot, but every time i go to ask him why, my throat starts burning and I can't breathe, so i keep my mouth shut and help him study like we've been doing since year 5.

as he lights up the new cigarette, the song stops, so i wander into the kitchen and rewind the cassette tape and push play. when i reenter the room, he's staring at me, his brown eyes soft, but his smile dangerous.

"come over here," he politely demands, patting down the cushion on the sofa next to him. it's not where i was sitting before, in fact, it's closer.

i can feel my nerves getting the best of me, but i sit down anyway.

he smiles, removing the lit cigarette from his mouth and into his right hand.

as he holds the cigarette in his hand, too close to his hair, he explains.

"a shotgun kiss is when i inhale the smoke from this cigarette and then blow it into your mouth," he simply puts it, moving the cigarette back to his lips.

"want to?" he speaks, his face lighting up just at the thought of it.

in all honesty, i didn't want to. i mean, we were already drifting apart, but if i did what he asked we might become better friends. but at the same time, my mum would be pissed if i come home smelling like cigarette smoke.

i nod my head anyway.

he took a drag of his cigarette and motions me to come closer to his face. i do so and he blows it all over the place, making my eyes water.

"damnit, niall!" i whine, before turning my head away from him, feeling mad and embarrassed.

he laughs and then speaks.

"come on al, just get a little closer, please."

i let out an annoyed sigh but scooch closer to him anyway.

our noses are almost touching as he gently blows the smoke out of his mouth, the fumes hitting my nose.

niall laughs before speaking.

"alex you dork," he states before laughing again.

i give him a confused look as my face turns red.
