the digital clock on the nightstand flashes out '2:34 A.M.'. chris rubs his eyes open as he's awaken yet again during the night, leaving him with barely any sleep. he groans before sitting up a bit to get comfortable again. he looks to his side to see the smaller boy sleeping peacefully on his stomach, facing chris. he looks at the boy for a few more seconds before pushing the covers off of himself.

chris sighs quietly, gets up and leaves the bedroom. as he makes his way down the dark hallway, he walks into the kitchen to grab a lighter and a few cigarettes before sliding the glass doors to the balcony open. he sits down on the floor of the balcony and leans against the gate of it, sighing as he watches the sky.

this was the fourth night in a row that chris couldn't get any decent sleep. no matter how tired he is or how hard he tried, he just couldn't fall asleep. but whenever he did get a bit of sleep, he would either wake up a few minutes later or be awaken by the blinding sun shining through the bedroom window combined with the sounds of gordie getting ready for the day.

sure, getting up to go have a smoke isn't going to help him but he's already set on the fact that not sleeping will just be the new normal for him, so he's planning to get used to it.

chris' thoughts are interrupted when he hears the patter of smaller boy's feet making their way out on the balcony. gordie sits down on the chair, keeping to himself. his hands are placed under his small thighs, shivering slightly as he watches chris.

"what are you doing?", he asks softly, the sound of sleep in his voice.

"i can't sleep for shit". chris replies before taking along drag from his cigarette and blowing the smoke out as he sighs.

gordie just nods in response and looks out at the city below them. his eyes wander over the few people on the sidewalk. he brings his legs and knees up to his chest, resting his cheek against his bony knees before looking over at chris.

"do you ever create imaginary scenarios about people you see on the street?". gordie blurts out before looking along the streets below. chris furrows his eyebrows and looks up at him.

"what the hell are you talking about?". chris looks at gordie and tries to hold back a smile.

"no, just listen", gordie says before pointing to someone across the street. "do you see that guy right there? The one wearing the blue jacket?"

"mhm", chris nods, as he takes another drag while smoking while he watches the man walk down the street.

"well..maybe he just left his wife of ten years and is leaving to catch plane to greece or something so he can start a new life before realizing that he's too old". gordie looks over at chris, wanting some reassurance.

"yeah, yeah!", chris nods, "or maybe he's just a crackhead looking for some prostitute to give him a quickie". gordie slumps down, rolling his eyes.

"come on". gordie fakes a frown before he smiles and watches chris get up, putting his cigarette out and lighting a new one.

"you're weird". chris says, leaning against the railing again, but this time, standing up. gordie continues to watch the taller boy. chris glances at him.

"what?"

"nothing".

"come on, tell me". chris takes a grab for his cigarette and runs his hand through his hair, waiting for a response.

"no".

"gordie, come on, please?"

"fine, i'm just imagining a scenario about you..". gordie smiles.

"seriously? what am I then? some college dropout who leaves everything to sail the ocean or some shit?"

"no but you can be if you want to". gordie replies as he gets up and walks back inside the apartment.

"then tell me". chris says as he puts his cigarette out.

"come back to bed and I will". gordie says. chris tries not to smile and he follows gordie back to bed.
