The day was finally over, I had worked all day long alongside Jack and Meg on the art of the upcoming White Stripes album and was exhausted, in my head I had all the due dates I needed to work on for school, "why did I ever choose to mayor on architecture when I'm working for Sony Music?" I thought to myself, but I remembered how much I loved overworking, it kept me sane.
Electric Lady Studios was closing for the day, a bummer, I had already settled myself onto a Boho couch with my laptop over my bony legs, and was on the focused zone, deminishing every tone of the imagery I was generating to white, red and black. It was amazing work, Jack had came up with incredibly beautiful ideas, and a name/concept was also coming up on our heads, something to do with an animal and a circus, maybe a zebra (considering the stripes) or, as Meg had mentioned, an Elephant.
When an employee told us that it was time to leave, we all grabbed our stuff, as little or much as it may had been, and left, I certianly did not want to go back to my horribly small apartment soon, so I was lucky when Jack said, "let's go over to my place and finish the work of today, so we can take a break tomorrow", Meg didn't seem very exited about this idea, but keept on walking with us, she had divorced Jack two years ago, or so I was told discretly by their manager, with the intention of me not saying a word about how they were not actually siblings like they told on interviews.
After some ten minutes of walking throught old and beautiful New York buildings, we got to Jack's place, a little (but not as little as mine) one floor apartment with not a lot of furniture, one couch, original kitchen and one single bedroom left to the side.
Jack left his guitar case on the floor of the living room and told Meg and I to make ourselves at home. Meg got out her cigarrettes and offered me one, but I thanked her and told her I had my own, she smoked red Marlboros and I felt that was too much for me, even though I smoked French cigarrettes from the stash I had brought directly from my homeland, I felt American cigarrettes tasted too much of chemicals and not enough of tobacco. I sat down with Meg and we smoked and talked for a little bit while Jack was rearranging his guitar before asking us if we wanted something to drink, "I have some beer and cheap wine, hope that's not an issue", Meg laughed and asked for the cheap wine and so did I, he didn't have actual glasses as this was a provitional place away from his beloved Detroit, so he brought the bottle and some disposable cups.
I was a little bit nervous to drink, I had never been too good with alcohol, I blamed that on the fact that I was very underweight, but I drank a glass anyway (or rather, cup).
We talked for a while, about the art, the colors, the concepts and hidden meanings of the album; they told me stories about playing in abandoned buildings in Detroit a few years back, and I told them about my brief modelling career in Paris and balancing that with architecture school and album art design. They seemed very impressed about all of that, even thought they where maybe the most hardworking band I had ever met, but they said that was a very Detroit thing to do.
"Alright I'm going to go now" said Meg after we finished our stories and our wine.
"Do you want me to go with you Meg? it's pretty late", Meg looked back at Jack with a friendly smile, "No Jack, thanks, I'll see you guys on Friday."
"Bye Meg", we said in unison.
We where left the two of us, Jack was sitting next to me on this old looking but confortable couch, we looked at eachother and smiled, but I didn't think much of it. I had a story of engaging with relatively famous men, but I was certian nothing was ever going to happen between Jack and I, after all, you could see from miles away how he still had a thing for Meg.
"I'mma get a beer, do you want one, Kaiku?" said as he got up from the couch.
"Yeah sure, thanks"
