Divine
"Divine. Leaving already?", ask my colleague, Kevin.
I take off my white coat and grab my handbag along with my car keys. "Yep. I'm on my way out.", I respond.
I was finally able to land a decent job after having Tripp and I've been working as a veterinary researcher. It basically organismal biology where we study how the evolution, heredity and development shape in animal and plant life takes place.
"Where you headed?"
"My son's basketball game.", I answer shortly glancing at my watch. "I'll see you Monday, enjoy the weekend.", I say quickly, rushing out and heading to my car.
I drive to my son's school, wanting to arrive at his school in time for his game and I do as I'm find a parking spot. I take just my purse and phone and proceed to put my handbag in the trunk. I speed walk towards the gym and I spot Tripp with his teammates and his coach addressing them, most likely going over their game strategies.
"Divine!", I look up at the stands and one of the mom's call me up. I head towards her and decide to sit with her throughout the game.
"Hi.", I greet the strawberry blonde lady. "How are you Waverley?", I ask politely.
"Oh you know, never been better. I enjoy these moments watching Travis play.", replies Waverley.
I nod in agreement. I love watching my Tripp interacting and partaking in the school's extra curriculum and events. Sometimes they do take out time from work but that's only once in awhile. Today's game however is their final and soon there will be new sports to participate in for the next term.
"Those two have played every sport in this school since first grade.", I comment as we both chuckle. "But Tripp might have mentioned something about doing other activities after school that are not in the school's curriculum."
The whistle is blown and the game starts. I cheer Tripp and his teammates on over the loud crowd. "So where's Mark? He's usually here with you every game.", I ask Waverley. Mark is Waverley's husband and he has never missed any of his son's games or his daughter's pageants.
"Oh he's at the office, in a meeting that he says is impossible to get out of.", she chuckles. "You know my husband he's a busy man."
"No doubt.", I say in between of watching both the game and listening.
"This game though...I have no idea why they scheduled for a Friday. It should've been tomorrow."
"I agree with you. I had to take an afternoon off to come here.", I say. It's no problem really. I would anything for Tripp.
~•••••••••••••••••••••••~
The game is over and Tripp's team won. I say my goodbyes to Waverley and meet Tripp down the stands. He sees me and walks over to me as I wave him to come by.
"Hey Tripp congratulations.", I say bending to his level and giving him a hug. "You guys did a good job.", I compliment pulling away and holding him at arms length, giving him a smile.
"Thanks mom.", he says but the tone of his voice doesn't seem as if he's happy. I take my time to study his expression only to find a grim and sad one.
A frown replaces my smile as I stare at my son. "What's wrong?", I ask him.
"Nothing.", he answers not looking me in my eyes and that's a clear indication for me to know that he's lying. "Let's just go home.", he says before heading out the gym. I follow behind him until we reach the car. I unlock it and Tripp sits in the back as I get into the driver's seat.
I begin driving and Tripp has yet to say another word. What's wrong with him? He is honestly a bubbly child, who is outspoken and a little too smart for his age.
"So what sports do you wanna do this time?", I ask trying to start a conversation.
"I don't know."
"You hungry?", I ask again. "You must be hungry from your game."
He sighs before answering. "I'm fine mom I just wanna go home."
Upon hearing his responds, I too heave a deep sigh of my own and just decide to drop any form of conversation on our way home.
I wonder what's got him so bummed out.
