CHAPTER FOUR

R O S E P O V

I can't believe that just happened. She crossed the line, and being publicly embarrassed like that in front of everyone was really tough. I don't usually get embarrassed easily but being called out by someone I care about hurts.

I decided to skip class. I've been dreading and am sitting in the school library, waiting for Lily so that we can sneak out. It's quiet here, and I won't take any chances of running into him.

Lily: I am going to be a little late.

Sighing, I set my phone aside and picked up the stack of books that were in front of me. It had been a long time since I read a book purley out of enjoyment. The teachers at school seem determined to make reading a chore especially in literature.

Be embarrassed if your crush calls you out

You will never be loved

What to do if you ask a person who is already taken

"Are these books targeting me?" I scoffed in disbelief. Did Ava intentionally place them here for me to find? Or was it a sign from above, telling me that I deserved this?

From across the room, I could hear the sound of the librarians' laughter. "Elliot, you're here! Didn't expect to see you at this hour with your class schedule."

"We got let out early today. Looks like half the class decided to skip," he replied, making my heart race. You have got to be kidding me, out of all the people to run into, it had to be him.

"What should I do first?" he asked.

"You can start by putting away those books over there on the table," the librarian suggested. I glanced around and indeed, the tabletops were covered with stacks of books. I heard footsteps approaching, was he heading my way? I should leave but then I realized that I couldn't leave without him noticing me, since the door is right in the front.

Should I make a run for it through the window? I'm only on the second floor -- maybe a few fractures wouldn't be too bad? I internally facepalmed at the thought, how will I skate with two broken legs.

I hurriedly stood up and darted toward the bookshelves, hiding among them as he approached the tables.

I stood still in my spot, peering through the narrow gaps between the shelves as he gathered the books. His back was turned to me -- if I leave right now can I slip away unnoticed?

I could possibly when he puts the books on the shelves. He picked up the books from the same table I was sitting earlier and began walking in my direction.

Why was he coming this way? I glanced at the aisle sign and sighed, I was in the romance section. I couldn't leave without him seeing my face. Great.

Quickly, I gathered my hair and let it cascade down. I grabbed a random book and practically shoved my face. It was the worst day to wear a dress. All I could do was stand motionless, hoping he wouldn't notice me.

I heard his footsteps approaching, and when I looked down, I saw his feet right behind me. My heart raced. What should I do? I was about to step aside when I felt his arm brush against my shoulder as he reached up to place a book on the top shelf. What in the cheesy romance novels is going on. He was standing directly behind me. Should I run blindly with the book covering my face?

"Sorry," he whispered, his voice soft and raspy, sending shivers down my spine. I never imagined that I would find myself in a situation like this with him. Snap out of it, Rose, I thought to myself. I needed to find a way to leave.
