There were a million and one ways to start the day and mine just happened to have started in the worst way possible.

"Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed" Dean my assistant handed me a cup of coffee which I took a huge gulp from and instantly felt my muscles begin to relax.

"What do you expect. I was woken up by a call from my grandmother which was followed by another from my dad" he took a seat

"Let me guess the state of the company" he took a sip from his coffee.

I sighed, everything had been going on great ever since my parents handed the company over to me. Our stocks went up in a matter of months, our clientele increased and the demand in the market was skyrocketing, but everything came crashing down when mom fell ill every penny and time went into her treatment despite all that she passed.

"What did did she want?" I took another sip from my coffee then placed my chin on my hand "Called to remind me about her dinner party tomorrow night, but not before giving me an earful about the state of the company, how it was all my mother's fault blah blah blah. Honestly I stopped listening after she mentioned something about crabs"

Dean laughed "crabs?"
"Like I said, I lost concentration after a point" i shrugged my shoulders "I never want to be in your shoes when it comes to dealing with her and your father" I sighed and shook my head in response

"We are going to be fine sweetie, like I always say focus on the positive and leave the negative" he gave me a kiss on my forehead

"Thank you" he smiled then left to his office

"Kenny!" I heard my name before Alice burst into my office. Her Chanel bag was hanging perfectly on her left arm which held a cup of coffee, a macho latte if I guessed correctly.

"that flat ass jerk stood me up" I couldn't help laughing. "Trust me, It's not funny" I couldn't stop. "I'm sorry Alice, but-" I burst into another fit of laughter which made her roll her eyes

"You are such a bitch" she approached my table gently placing her bag on top of it before taking a seat.

"C'mon Alice you have to admit the whole thing is funny, especially after you hyped this guy up" Alice shrugged her shoulders as she took a sip from her coffee "he was hot"

"And now he has a flat ass?"

"Fuck you, I will send the files over to you" she grabbed her bag and left my office while I tried to control myself

"Thank you Alice" I shouted in between laughs

I looked at the mirror one last time. The purple dress hugged my body perfectly with a deep v- neckline and slim gold accent belt. I paired with  black Louboutin heels, the makeup was minimal, but enough to highlight my face features. Grabbing my black purse I headed out of my apartment down the the garage.

I gave my keys to the valet and walked up the stairs into the house.

'She sure knows how to throw a party'

Sighting my grandmother with a couple of guests, I drowned down the glass of champagne that I took from one of the servers before making my way towards her. Up close I could see her beauty, the resemblance to my father was so striking and amusing, twenty five years and I was still yet to get used to their resemblance. Her hair was pined up in her signature style and she had on a teal colored dress which was perfect in her skin.

"Hello grandmother" I flashed her and the other guests a smile

"Kendra, I am so glad you made it" she place her hand on the small of my back.

'not that I had a choice, if I didn't come only heaven knows what you would do to me'

"Gentlemen, this is my granddaughter Kendra" she introduced me to the men that she was talking to, but one in particular caught my eye.

"Oh shit" I felt a pinch on my arm "Language" she whispered into my ears with a smile still plastered on her face, I smiled back in apology.

He smiled "Mrs Denver, I never knew you had such a beautiful granddaughter"

"She is isn't she, not a fan of the spotlight though" she stroked my arm "Kendra meet Nicolas Martinezs"

I stretched my hand for a handshake which I would not have done were the situation different.

"Nice to meet you Mr Martinezs" I tried to keep the smile plastered on my face as he shook my hand giving it a light squeeze. His eyes were cold stare, mine were colder, finally he let go.

"Well gentlemen, it was nice meeting you. I should go and get aquatinted with the other guests" I excused myself heading straight to the balcony. I needed the fresh air.

"Tough night" I was handed a drink which I gulped down at once

"You have no idea. She invited you?"

Rosetta took a sip from her own drink as she leaned against the railings of the balcony "she did, probably knows I am the only one who can keep you sane at an event like this" we both laughed confirming how true that was.

Rosetta and I have being friends from way back before my mother passed. Her mother and mine were the best of friends, but life happened on both our ends which really just brought us closer.

"oh shit" I heard her say, following her eyes I understood the reason for her exclamation

"yelp, the devil showed up" I sighed staring at my glass and knowing that I in need another one if I was going to survive the night.

"close your mouth Rose" I rolled my eyes taking two more champagne glasses from the servers tray as he passed by offering one to her.

"he is freaking staring at you. I can literally feel chills going down my spine"

I couldn't help laughing and she joined me

"Kendra" my name being called interrupted us and standing in front of us was my sister. She was an epitome of the perfect daughter right from her mannerisms down to the shoes on her feet. She was the kind to never have a single strand of hair out of place.

I smiled in return "didn't know you had arrived" Rose coughed then took a sip from her drink earning a look from me

"Rosetta" Kiara smiled. "Kiara sweetheart, how are you doing? how is Ryan?" I tried to suppress my laughter, the sarcasm was dripping in her voice.

"Ryan is doing fine, he just landed himself another business deal, so I'm pretty sure he's around here somewhere talking to his partners" she chuckled as she turned back to look for him.

how wonderful, shouldn't you be by his side?" I took a sip from my glass fixing my eyes on the back of who I figured would be Ryan. She smiled then looked towards his direction "I'm always by his side, tonight he should mix with the men. Excuse me ladies, I need to find grandmother" she flashed a smile before leaving.

"ugh,I hate it when she's around" Rosetta took a sip from her drink

"she's my sister, she always going to be around" I turned to lean against the railings of the balcony.

"She always talking about how amazing Ryan is and how great she's doing" I laughed

"I smell jealousy"

"suck it" she replied which made us laugh

"I think we have spent about enough time here, how about we ditch this and get Thai?"

"I have being waiting for you to call the shots"
