"Hey, Honey?" shouted Scarlet's mom, who was in the dining room.
"Yeah?" Scarlett shouted back from the kitchen.
"Grandma just called. She said she isn't feeling well... again." her mom sighed.
She walked into the kitchen where Scarlet was playing games on her phone. "And I need to go to work. Can you go buy her some muffins or whatever at the bakery?" She asked. Scarlet looked up at her mom.
"I would, but I have work. And Ally is supposed to-"
"No Scarlet," said her mother sternly, "Family first." She opened her purse and rummaged around in it.
"But-" Scarlet started, and put her phone down.
"No 'buts'," interrupted her mother. "Here," She handed her Subway card to Scarlet, which she grabbed. "Listen, you can get something for yourself as well. I really have to run. Mr. Jones isn't cooperating well with the other nurses." Her mom closed her purse and looked at Scarlet's bright pink eyes. "The hospital needs me and Grandma needs you. I'll find a way to talk to the teacher tomorrow about your work. Okay?"
"Well. If I don't have to do my work," Scarlet smiled. "Alright. I'll go."
"That's my girl," her mom smiled. Her bright blond hair neatly tied in a bun and her bright blue eyes showing tiredness. "Now. I have to go. And remember--"
"No talking to strangers, holler for help if needed, and call 911. I know, I know," Scarlet repeated what she'd been told a thousand times, if not more "Oh! Tell Mr. Jones I said hello!"
"Okay sweetie! Bye!" Her mother slipped on her shoes and closed her door. She heard the car start and her mother was gone.
Scarlet stood up from her chair and slipped in her earbuds. Her favorite song began to play. She went to the mirror to look at herself. She brushed her brown hair and her bright pink eyes still pink.
Scarlet's eyes were always pink. There wasn't a reason for why. It's just rare. But she thinks it looks awesome. Bottom side? Everyone called her 'Pinkeye'. You know? Like the gross disease? Well, Ally, her only friend, took a chance and they became friends. Best friends actually.
There was this other boy. Dexter. He would always watch her. He was odd. He didn't have friends, but he would just watch everyone. Just staring. Waiting to attack or something. Scarlet shuddered always when she thought of him. Thankfully, Ally was always with her.
After brushing her hair, her teeth, and washing her face, she grabbed her bright red sweatshirt and put it on. She locked the door and headed to the bakery near the subway station.
As she walked inside the bakery, she smelt the smell of cookies. She loved the bakery, the smell, and the baker. He was such a sweet man. He was so big and strong. But his cookies are to die for. He is so gentle and sweet as well. She knew his name. Henry. Everyone knew his names. She walked up to the counter, next to the display of cookies. She watched him as he cut up some cookie shapes from the cookie dough.
"Scarlet!" Henry's voice boomed. "How are you darling?" She smiled.
"I'm doing well. My grandma isn't, however." She replied. Henry nodded.
"I know." He replied. "Your mother called in to let me know." He held up a bag. Scarlet already knew from the smell it was those cookies.
"Thank you so much!" She reached in her pocket to grab her money but the Baker stopped her.
"Free of charge." He smiled. "Oh!" He shouted. His voice boomed again and she was sure he could have set off an earthquake. "I have a new recruit with me. He goes to your school, and he talks about you all the time!" He smiled.
