CHAPTER 1
Natallie
"Hey, did you hear? Mrs. Owens retired, replaced by a new one! I heard he was young." I heard a female student gush out as I walked in the gates of our school, my head low and my eyes trailing the cracks on the concrete. "I heard he was hot, too!" Her other friend pointed out.
It was my first day as a senior, and I was expecting nothing new. People usually ignored me, no, scratch that, they probably don't know I even exist. But it's a good thing, though. I don't get bullied and I get to spend much more time in studying, so I'm not going to complain about being ignored.
I continued walking through the hallways with my eyes trailing the tiled floor, when I saw a pair of feet clad in black converse stop directly in front of me. I slowly snapped my gaze up to see a guy with messy brown hair, looking at me helplessly.
"May I help you?" I asked in a low voice. I haven't seen him before. Maybe a new transfer student?
"Uhm.. I'm new here and I'm kinda lost, and, uh, can you tell me how to get to the main office?" He asked with a cheeky grin on his face. He was rubbing the nape of his neck with his hand.
"You just went past it. It's near the entrance." I eyed him up. He was handsome, I admit. He was wearing a green shirt with faded jeans and his black converse. Nothing too flashy, but it fit him well. Really well.
At the mention of it, he perked up bit, "Really? May you please tell me where?" He asked me with his hands clasped together in a begging gesture.
I looked at my wrist watch. I still had time. "I can bring you there."
His eyes were now wide with gratitude. "Really? Thank you! You're a life saver!" Before I could respond, I was suddenly engulfed in a big hug. It was warm... But I wan't used to it. I patted his back awkwardly and he let go of me with a big goofy grin.
"Now, let's go!" He said, grabbing my arm and dragging me with him.
"U-uhm.. Where are you going?"
"To the office!" He said excitedly.
"But it's on the other way.." I muttered shyly.
"Oh, okay." He said cheerfully and dragged me the other way. He was.. cheerful. Way too cheerful from what I was used to. I was used to the quiet surroundings of the library.
"So, who's Mrs. Owens?" His voice suddenly cut through my train of thoughts.
"Mrs. Owens? Oh, uhm, she was my English teacher. I heard there was a new teacher, though."
He laughed, "No kidding, I hear that this Mrs. Owens resigned and shit. Oh, and there's a new replacement. A young and hot one at that!" He said the last part with a gleam hinted in his eyes. He looked excited about the new teacher. Way too excited.
"What do you mean?" I looked at him, confused, as we reached the office.
"Name?" The old lady behind the window asked without glancing up.
"Matthew Myers," He told the lady with a smile. He winked at me before he grabbed the folder the lady pulled out for him, "Thanks," He waved at the lady. She just grunted. "Come on, let me see your schedule." He put his hand out.
I frowned at him, "Okay.. But what does that wink mean?" I asked as I rummaged through my back to look for my schedule. I got the neatly folded paper and handed it to him. He scanned it with a big smile, then, that smile suddenly turned into a scowl. I heard him curse lowly.
"What's wrong?" I asked him, my eyebrows scrunching up.
"We have all classes together, except for the last two."
"Oh.." I said
"My English is before yours. So that means I'll see the new hot teacher first," He said excitedly, "And I'm gonna tell you what I'll see after that."
"What does it matter? I'm going to see him afterwards," I shrugged. He looked at me with raised eyebrows.
"Oh, but I wanna share what I'll be seeing," He stated pointedly.
"Oh, uh, okay.." I agreed hesitantly. "Uh, Matthew..?"
"Hm?" He hummed in response
"I don't really think it's a good idea to hang out with me.."
"And why is that?"
"Because you would immediately drop down to the bottom of the totem pole even before you can blink, because I'm invisible here, because I'm like a ghost, because, yeah.." I shrugged again. He looked at me weirdly and snorted.
"You really think that matters? Besides, you're a thousand times better then all the live plastics walking around here," He shook his head and looked at me with a smile, "And you say 'because' way too much." He suddenly stopped walking and stared at me. He probably saw the look of confusion on my face, because he said, "I forgot to ask your name.."
I laughed a bit. "Natallie, Natallie Russo."
He held out his hand, "Matthew," He smiled at me and I shook his hand. "And you Natallie, are my new best friend." He grinned at me and winked. Then, I remembered something.
"So.. About earlier in the office.." He looked at me questioningly, "Why was your response a wink?" He looked kind of uncomfortable after that question. "What's wrong?"
"Uh.. Promise me you won't laugh or run away."
"I promise."
"Pinky promise," He held out his pinky. I smiled at this. This'll be my first pinky promise, so I'm kind of happy that he trusts me already, I hope. So I linked my pinky with his.
"I pinky promise," I said with a smile. He stared at me for a moment before a determined look crossed his face. He suddenly leaned in as if to whisper.
"I'm gay." Then, the bell rang and he smiled, "Now let's get our books from our lockers," He said as he pulled a dazed me to where his locker was supposed to be located.
Oh. Well, at least this year won't be as boring as I thought.
I just hope my grades won't slip.
