When the elevator opened, Moon didn't waste a second on questioning Sadie.
"So what happened?"
Sadie hesitated. She didn't feel comfortable telling him about her dream. The only one who she felt comfortable confiding in, April, was miles away. It didn't help either that Sadie had no way to contact her. Her cell phone was completely trashed after the accident, and she didn't have her friend's number memorized. "Well, I had a nightmare, and thy next thing I knew, I was in my bed with my hands burning up."
"I see." He was silent for a moment, but didn't slow down his quick pace. People were entering and exiting doors all over the hall, and there was a quiet buzz of chatter. Although the hours were early in the morning, this area was already wide awake with action. "You know, it's normal for powers to be spontaneous before one learns how to hone them," he continued, "but you never used them before?"
"I didn't even know they existed until you showed up. How was it they never got out of control before?"
"That's what I'm wondering," Asher interjected. "even if she never learned how to use them, you would think at one point or another they'd just do something!"
Moon nodded in agreement. "That's strange. Hopefully my sister has some answers."
"Wait!" Moon was about to swing open the clear door to a room lined with hospital beds, but Sadie held out her hand to stop him. Her quick slam against the glass made her palms ache even more, but she stood firm. "I still have a few questions."
Moon pulled his hand off from the door back to his side. "Fine. Ask away."
"Why weren't any alarms going off in the hall during the fire?"
"We enchant them," Moon explained. "We don't want to disturb others if they go off in late or early hours. We have a security room that detects if any alarm goes off. So, they called my room and Asher and I were able to help."
"But how did you get there so fast?" Sadie looked straight into Moon's eyes. Would his story align with Asher's?
He cleared his throat. "Lucky for you, I got up to go get a glass of water. If I was asleep, the fire could have done quite a bit more damage, especially since it was strongly enchanted."
Sadie looked over at Asher from the corner of her eye. He didn't react at all to what Moon said. He clearly wasn't going to press his friend for more details, even if it was a lie.
"Wait, what? Strongly enchanted fire?! I don't even know how I did it!" Sadie said. Her head raced as another foreign idea was added to it. There was so much she wanted to learn, but how to do so was an even harder thought to grasp.
It was Moon's turn to hesitate. "Let's just go see my sister, ok?"
Sadie nodded in response.
Moon pushed open the door and led them towards the back of the big white room. Passing by, Sadie saw a little boy with his head on upside down and a girl who switched her right and left hands. She stared at them, eyes wide, as if they were performers in a circus.
"Typical youth," Asher said with a smile. "Always trying to do the 'cool' spells. Although it's always funny to see them try to pull it off." He snickered under his breath.
