Steve sat alone, in the destroyed bar. He would've been much happier had he been in the bar when it was wrecked, or at least that's what he was thinking. He barely registered the fact that he had even had a conversation with Peggy, he was drowning in guilt, in memories, how he wished he was drowning in water. All he could think about was that bright smile, those bright eyes, that bright wit, all gone to waste in a ravine.
Clear blue water, high tide came and brought you in
And I could go on and on, on and on, and I will
Skies grew darker, currents swept you out again
And you were just gone and gone, gone and gone...He was on autopilot for the rest of his time, he wasn't ever really there anymore. He didn't care what became of him, because the person he was, was for Bucky. He built himself up for him, he existed purely for him. And now he was gone.
He dove the plane into the water. Not to be a hero, not to save anybody but himself. He was so ready to waste himself, it would've scared him if he were okay.
In silent screams,
in wildest dreams
I never dreamed of this...He hadn't planned on living. He didn't want to. He couldn't. There wasn't anything for him to live for, really. He was still on autopilot, and he thought with a jolt, he probably would be for the rest of his life.
He was told he could get closure if he actually tried, but those were from people who didn't know Bucky. They didn't know about Bucky. They thought Bucky was his best friend, they had no idea. How do you get closure when you're missing half of you?
He woke up abruptly. He stared at him, through broken eyes. He distantly heard himself speak.
"Bucky?"
"Who the hell is Bucky?"
Turning off autopilot and taking the front seat, the real Steve appeared. He did what Maria told him, he destroyed the hellicarriers. All that mattered now was Bucky. Saving Bucky. Even though everyone said it must've been an agent or something that saved him, he had a distinct feeling that's not what it was.
Natasha told him that his old feelings were resurfacing. He didn't tell her he already knew that.
This love is good, this love is bad
This love is alive back from the dead
These hands had to let it go free
And this love came back to me...He searched the whole city, and he would search the world. He only had Sam by his side, but that's all he needed. He called Stark, he helped Steve. He would go to the ends of the earth to find him.
Tossing, turning, struggled through the night with someone new
And I could go on and on, on and on
Lantern burning, flickered in my mind for only you
But you're still gone, gone, gone...Hiding in a broken down apartment, old as Steve, for it was his, was he found. Rotting blankets wrapped tightly around him, Steve took him in.
Been losing grip,
oh, sinking ships
You showed up just in time...Bucky was nurtured back to health, and when he was strong enough to speak, he didn't. Bucky was just as scared as Steve, just as broken as Steve. He was missing that piece too.
This love is good, this love is bad
This love is alive back from the dead
These hands had to let it go free
And this love came back to me...Together they decided they'd figure out their sharp edges, they'd fix themselves again. For they were both worn with age and damaged from misuse and needed to relearn how to live.
The first step was filling in the blanks in Bucky's memory. Steve filled him in on every single thing he could.
The only hard part was Bucky's last night with Steve before the serum. Before Bucky left the apartment that morning, he kissed Steve's cheek, and he knew then that Bucky would get his orders that day. Steve stumbled over these words, not sure how to phrase them. Bucky gave a small secretive smile and all was okay.
Your kiss, my cheek, I watched you leave
Your smile, my ghost, I fell to my knees...Steve took that moment to tell Bucky what took him ninety years to gather up the courage.
"I love you Bucky...a lot..."
Bucky smiled and quietly responding, "I love you too. Always have."
Steve was mad about the missed opportunities, but that didn't matter now. Bucky mattered now.
When you're young you just run
But you come back to what you need...They trooped into the world together, heads held high and ready for anything thrown at them. They where scared, but they had each other.
This love is good, this love is bad
This love is alive back from the dead
These hands had to let it go free
And this love came back to me...They were broken, but they were broken together. Though the chains of time had wrapped around them, they had come free and were strong again.
They found each other in the dark and they clasped on tight. For neither time, HYDRA, or anybody else, could break them.
This love left a permanent mark
This love is glowing in the dark
These hands had to let it go free
And this love came back to me.
