When we got home, I booked it out of the car and ran inside. We had literally hit every possible red light on the way home, and I couldn't stand being in the car any longer with the boys.
"Someone's in a rush." My dad teased as I flew through the door. He was leaning against the counter lazily flipping through an outdated newspaper.
"I feel like I’m struggling to find the definition of that word, what does rush mean again?" I said, playfully tapping the side of my temple.
"Since when does my straight A student not know her vocabulary?" My dad asked with a scoff.
"Sorry, I was in the car with Adam and Ashton for thirty minutes. I think some of their stupidity rubbed off on me." I said, making my dad laugh.
"Hey, I'm not dumb!" Ashton retorted, walking in the house throwing his bag on the ground. He pulled off his grubby shoes and tossed them to the side. Alaska awoke from her slumber as the smell from the soles began to fill the room, even she wasn't pleased with the sudden change in odour.
"Just keep telling yourself that." Adam said, following him.
"Whatever." Ash grumbled.
"Hey daddy." I said leaning over the counter looking up at my dad with my puppy eyes, "Can I have a horse?"
"No princess, you know we don't have enough money to buy another one." My dad smiled while I pouted. He briefly stopped and said, “At the moment.” shooting me wink; this made a smile creep across my face.
"Speaking of horses, I'm going to feed Layla." Ashton said, starting on his was to feed his brown mare.
It’s not fair, but then again life's not fair; I should know. I've been on this earth for fifteen years and I've been asking for a horse ever since. I’ve never received one and it is always the same answer. My brothers and my father have gotten four though! Great, now I sound like a whining brat.
I walked over to the couch and sat next to Adam. He started to reach for the remote, but I was quicker. Then he started to reach for my hand, with a smirk on his face. How does that boy even know how to function? I swear, it’s just plain dumb trying to take the remote from me.
"Mine." I practically growled at him.
"You're crazy." Adam said.
"And you're about to get racked." I smiled.
Adam raised his hands up in surrender, which made me laugh. I turned on the TV and started to look through the channels when I came across a Disney movie.
About two cans of lemonade and thirty minutes later, Ashton came into the house, panting like a dog chasing after an invisible bone. I turned my head and looked at him raising an eyebrow as if I was asking him a silent question.
"Amber, come to the stables. I have something for you." Ash managed to get out before running back out onto the porch.
I groaned and reluctantly got up to walk towards the door. When I opened the door, I was hit with a sudden burst of heat caused by summertime humidity rolling in.
I started to run after Ashton, my thoughts had drifted to the worst possible scenario making me scared that something bad had happened. When I caught up to him, his run turned into a jog and finally into a walk. The rest of the way there we didn't talk, only the sound of our feet hitting the grass could be heard.
When I got there, I smelt something really bad. I started to dramatically gag but Ashton didn't seem to be amused. I rolled my eyes and started to walk towards the stall that he was pointing at.
I opened the door and was almost speechless.
"Oh my God." I whisper in shock as the scene unfolds in front of me.
"I know." Ash whispers back running his hand through his hair, wiping the sweat from his brow.
I guess I wasn't thinking, because I hugged a very dirty Ashton. I could feel him smile, because his chin started to dig into the top of my head.
"Thank you, so much Ashton." I said quietly letting him slither out from the clutch of my arms. Ashton just smiled and urged me farther into the stall. I dropped to my knees and petted Layla's head.
"Good girl." I said. My hand extended, and I started to pet one of the best things that ever happened to me; a small black colt.
