Andy's parent's are going through a divorce in the first Toy Story.
This is why Andy's family moved to a smaller house, because Andy's dad cannot help with the financial support.
Also Andy's toy's are suppose to be "hero's to look up to" since his father is no longer around. Also Andy's mother dose not have a wedding ring in the movie.
